About The Position

Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking an Engineering Data Management Intern for a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program. The selected candidate will assist the Water Sewer Streets Bureau in managing the maintenance, renewal, and capital planning of various infrastructure assets, including streets, sidewalks, water mains, sanitary sewer mains, and right-of-way areas. This internship is ideal for recent graduates and current graduate students looking to gain hands-on experience in a public-sector environment, contributing to key County initiatives under the mentorship of senior staff.

Requirements

  • Recent, 2025 and/or 2026 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the Cohort Program (Sept. 2026).
  • No professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field.
  • Currently enrolled student in a Master’s degree program related to the internship, with no significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and availability to work during designated hours.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Data Science & Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Statistics, Economics, or related field.
  • Must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license and provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record.
  • Ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite (if driver's license is not obtained/maintained).

Nice To Haves

  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, PowerBI, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Cartegraph or similar asset management software.
  • Familiarity with ESRI (GIS) software.
  • Familiarity with Adobe software.
  • Experience with data analysis and asset management.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting, validating, and analyzing data to support predictive and preventative maintenance and asset renewal planning for water and sanitary sewer systems.
  • Updating and refining asset data, including consequence of failure scores and water service line inventory, to support regulatory compliance and planning efforts.
  • Conducting engineering records research to verify and update data for water, sewer, and related infrastructure assets (e.g., mains, manholes, hydrants, valves, and other right-of-way assets).
  • Migrating and integrating data across systems (e.g., Cartegraph, Excel, PAVER, and other platforms), including paving condition data, work history, risk scores, and hydraulic modeling data.
  • Assisting with asset creation, data entry, and maintenance of infrastructure inventories, including sidewalk networks and other County assets.
  • Utilizing tools such as ArcGIS Pro, Cartegraph, and Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Excel, Power BI) to analyze and visualize data, generate reports, create maps, and support capital planning and cost analysis.
  • Preparing as-built documentation and updating record drawings using appropriate software tools (e.g., Adobe).
