About The Position

The Engineering Associate at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department assists the Senior Engineering Associate in reviewing new development on private properties. The Engineering Associate reviews permits and plans for conformance with City codes, policies, standards, manuals, and regulations to ensure quality site development and land division within the City. The work is performed under the supervision of the Section Manager. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • Associate degree
  • Two (2) years of directly related experience.
  • A valid and unrestricted driver’s license with two (2) years of licensed driving is required.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field and two (2) years of directly related experience.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate from the State of Arizona.

Responsibilities

  • Performs an engineering review of site grading plans, drainage reports, stormwater pollution prevention plans, and geotechnical studies to ensure compliance with City, State, and Federal standards.
  • Conducts meetings with developers to discuss site demands or challenges.
  • Conducts site visits and discusses construction requirements with contractors.
  • Assists senior engineering associates with more complex projects.
  • Communicates permit and City code policy information through clear and effective communication channels (such as via email, phone, and in-person) with customers, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Contributes to interdepartmental outreach events to developers and community stakeholders by providing departmental knowledge and engagement.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with residents and partners.
  • Delivers public presentations regarding development activities.
  • Assists senior engineering associates with more complex communications.
  • Identifies projects that require floodplain use permits.
  • Intakes, processes, and issues floodplain use permits.
  • Processes, tracks, and files elevation certificates.
  • Reviews final plats, assurance agreements, substitute assurance agreements and identifies assurable items.
  • Coordinates plat process from application to release assisting resident or developer through application and approval process.
  • Oversees lot releases from the assurance agreements and ensures proper inspections have been completed and assurable items have been constructed.
  • Performs site visits and occasional inspections on projects that have been reviewed by the Site Engineering section.
  • Checks construction progress for compliance with approved plans and code.
  • Perform all other duties and tasks as assigned.
