About The Position

The Engineering Assistant I is in the Technical Review Section of the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. This position is a full proficiency, para-professional classification focused on providing technical support to Professional Engineers in providing plan and document reviews, construction plans, revocable permits and right of way permit and public easement reviews. This position is located in the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department within the City of Oklahoma City. Engineering Assistant I is a para-professional classification in which the worker must assume considerable responsibility for the design and generation of plans for proposed construction projects within an assigned area. Specialized work areas include paving, drainage, sanitary sewer, water lines, and airport construction. The required knowledge and skills of the assigned work unit must be acquired prior to assuming the position. Essential job functions include: gathering data for use in project designs or reports; reviewing construction plans and making recommended revisions on the basis of technical merit; responding to information requests; writing work orders, construction specifications, and other documents necessary for contract compliance or future reference; and supervising technical support staff by delegating, prioritizing, and reviewing their work. Work assignments, which are both general and specific in nature, are received verbally and in writing and are subject to extensive review by an immediate supervisor.

Requirements

  • Skill in critically reviewing drawings for design, accuracy, and neatness.
  • Skill in relating written technical information to drawings.
  • Skill in performing mathematical computations following standard formulas.
  • Skill in determining the most appropriate designs to meet field conditions and applicable standards.
  • Skill in preparing cost estimates.
  • Skill in supervising.
  • Ability to retain and recall information.
  • Ability to keep abreast of project status in the assigned work area.
  • Ability to travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in civil engineering, storm sewer, or technical review and regulations field.
  • Knowledge in review, preparation, or interpretation of final plats and legal descriptions.
  • Knowledge of design, plan review and project specifications of civil engineering plans.
  • Understanding of FEMA rules and regulations.
