About The Position

Current students in Engineering or Construction Management degree programs are strongly encouraged to apply! The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is now accepting applications for Engineering and Construction Intern (State Intern) positions throughout the State! Our interns work in many different capacities agency-wide. Positions are available throughout the Bureau of Engineering and Construction. Internships available starting in September 2026, ending by May 31, 2027. Work around your class schedule on a part-time basis with remote work available! Positions are available in our District Construction offices, Central Construction office, Materials Evaluation and Specifications, Quality Assurance, Project Administration, Traffic Project Design, Traffic Safety, Traffic Signals, Highway Design, Bridge Design, Facilities and Transit, and more! Locations: New Haven, Newington, Norwich, Rocky Hill and Thomaston. In a state agency this class is established as a structured internship program designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate college students for professional careers in administration, managerial and technical occupations by alternating periods of academic study and practical work experience in their chosen discipline.

Requirements

  • Current matriculation in an accredited Associate's, Bachelor's or advanced degree program determined by the Commissioner of the Department of Administrative Services or his/her designee to be appropriate preparation for employment in the designated agency and/or functional area.
  • Knowledge of principles, theories and concepts of appropriate discipline and ability to apply them in practical situations.
  • A valid driver’s license is required and must be maintained.
  • Must specify qualifications on application.
  • List earned credits and degrees from accredited institutions accurately on application.
  • If institution of higher learning is located outside of the U.S., responsible for providing documentation from a recognized USA accrediting service which specializes in determining foreign education equivalencies to the contact listed below by the closing date on the job posting.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Utilizing engineering-related computer software.
  • Experience with Multitasking and working as part of a team.
  • Experience with Providing verbal and written communication to diverse population, including presentation skills.
  • Experience with Using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Access.
  • Previous internship or work experience in transportation engineering or transportation construction engineering.
  • Currently matriculated in a civil engineering degree program for design or construction-related positions.
  • Currently matriculated in an engineering degree program in a position-relevant area for specialty positions (i.e., Electrical Engineering degree for position in Electrical Engineering).
  • Currently matriculated in a construction management degree program for construction-related positions.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Problem solve, recommend, and implement effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to providing safe and efficient transportation improvements for the traveling public.
  • Utilize computer aided design software (MicroStation) and other applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Read and analyze or prepare construction plans and estimates.
  • Receives practical training in application of theories and concepts relevant to work of employing agency.
  • Assists professional staff in performance of their duties.
  • Completes independent assignments as necessary.
  • May prepare reports.
