The Florida Department of Transportation’s four-year Professional Engineer Training Program provides hands-on training across engineering disciplines and a career path toward professional registration and leadership. The first 18 months include exposure to Materials, Planning, Traffic Operations, Structures, Design, Construction, and Maintenance. Placement in a technical area depends on performance and availability, with the goal of preparing trainees to attain a Florida Professional Engineer license. Salary increases are anticipated at 12, 24, 36, and 48 months, contingent on satisfactory performance and available funding; an additional increase may be granted upon obtaining a Florida Professional Engineer license. The trainee performs increasingly complex technical engineering, construction administration, surveying, planning, and related tasks during rotations in the State Materials Office and other program phases. Rotations include materials research and testing; roadway, drainage, traffic, and structures construction and design; maintenance operations; traffic operations and safety; survey and mapping; transportation planning and environmental management; right-of-way work; and structures design and review. Other duties may be assigned. The role requires travel as needed and response before, during, and after emergency situations.
