Engineer Structural : Level 2

Northrop Grumman•Chandler, AZ
•$79,300 - $118,900•Onsite

About The Position

Northrop Grumman Space Systems Sector is seeking an Associate Engineer Structural/Engineer Structural to join the Structural Test team within Launch and Exploration at its Chandler, Arizona facility. Under minimal direction, the engineer performs structural engineering tasks involving analysis, design, or testing; applies engineering theory and techniques to analytical problems; and uses established methods, mathematical formulas, prior design and test information, handbook data, and other sources relevant to assignments. The role includes structural stress and bolted-joint analysis for ground support equipment, test fixtures, compliance structures, and flight structures. The engineer uses classical stress and strain methods and software to evaluate structural integrity and failure, and to design flight components and ground support equipment for worst-case loading conditions. The position also involves interpreting customer requirements and specifications, producing technical documentation and reports, and gathering and interpreting flight, test, and materials data. The employee may perform other duties upon request.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline and 2 years of related engineering experience, or a master's degree in a STEM discipline and no years of related engineering experience.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance.
  • Strong structural analysis background, with demonstrated work experience and knowledge as a structural analyst.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis, classical stress and strain methodology, engineering statics, and structural mechanics.
  • Computer skills, including standard word-processing experience.
  • Ability to listen effectively, take direction, show initiative, accomplish assigned tasks, and complete work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to lead a team in safely executing structural load testing.

  • Basic problem-solving skills.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, or test environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural engineering tasks involving analysis, design, or testing under minimal direction.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge and engineering techniques to solve analytical engineering problems.
  • Select or modify established methods, mathematical formulas, prior design and test information, handbook data, and other information relevant to assignments.
  • Conduct stress and bolted-joint analyses of ground support equipment, test fixtures, compliance structures, and flight structures.
  • Address engineering issues related to missile and space systems using relevant engineering or scientific skills.
  • Use classical stress and strain methods and software to predict structural integrity and failure, and design flight components and ground support equipment to withstand worst-case loading conditions.
  • Develop proficiency with software such as FEMAP, NX NASTRAN, and MathCAD.
  • Interpret, select, and apply specifications and customer requirements to complete analyses.
  • Produce engineering documentation and technical reports or analyses supporting design, integration, and testing.
  • Gather, compile, and interpret technical data, including flight data, test data, and material test reports.
