About The Position

Starbucks is seeking a Senior Engineer to build the software foundation that powers in-store and drive-through experiences. This role involves working across edge and cloud environments to create dependable .NET services that connect devices, process data close to where it is generated, and integrate securely with enterprise cloud platforms. The team values practical innovation, operational excellence, and strong engineering craftsmanship. The engineer will design and develop secure, scalable services using C# and modern .NET for in-store edge and cloud environments, build resilient edge applications that can operate reliably with intermittent connectivity and synchronize data with cloud services, and create and maintain APIs, event-driven integrations, and messaging patterns. They will also design for performance, availability, scalability, security, observability, and safe recovery across distributed systems, improve existing code, develop automated tests, build and improve CI/CD pipelines, implement telemetry, logging, metrics, and alerting, troubleshoot production issues, document architecture and technical designs, shape technical requirements, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of computer science fundamentals, object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and common design patterns.
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including strong hands-on development with C# and modern .NET.
  • 3+ years of experience building cloud-based solutions using Microsoft Azure; experience with AWS or another major cloud platform is also valuable.
  • Experience designing distributed systems that span edge locations and cloud services, including offline operation, synchronization, retry, caching, and failure recovery patterns.
  • Hands-on experience with ASP.NET Core, RESTful APIs, background services, microservices, and event-driven or message-based architectures.
  • Experience with Azure services such as App Service, Functions, Container Apps or AKS, Service Bus, Event Hubs, IoT Hub, Key Vault, Azure Monitor, or equivalent technologies.
  • Experience developing or supporting software deployed to edge devices, store servers, gateways, kiosks, or similar distributed hardware environments.
  • Understanding of edge-to-cloud security, including device identity, certificate and secret management, encryption, authentication, authorization, and secure software updates.
  • Proficiency with relational and NoSQL data stores such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, SQLite, or Cosmos DB.
  • Experience with containerization and infrastructure as code using tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Bicep, Terraform, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with CI/CD and automation tools such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with observability practices and tools for centralized logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
  • Proven ability to design scalable, performant, maintainable, and secure production systems in a collaborative engineering environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating with peripherals, displays, printers, point-of-sale systems, or other in-store technology is preferred but not required.
