About The Position

This role involves providing technical advice, guidance, and training on assigned engineering program areas. The engineer will prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations, and offer engineering support and consultation. A key responsibility is effectively managing assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion. This includes communicating with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs. The engineer will perform engineering and design tasks to provide VDOT with accurate special designs for roadway items, review manufacturer shop drawings, and supervise the development and distribution of standard and special design insertable sheets for roadway plan assemblies. Providing technical expertise on related issues is also crucial.

  • Skill in building networks and relations with employees from other divisions, field personnel, contractors, and manufacturers and FHWA representatives.
  • Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include MS Office, project management and engineering software programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to review electronic file management and survey for compliance.
  • Experience applying roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials.
  • Skilled in the use of computers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical advice, guidance and training regarding assigned engineering program areas.
  • Prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations.
  • Provide engineering support and consultation related to engineering program area.
  • Effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion.
  • Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.
  • Perform engineering and design necessary to provide VDOT with accurate special designs to roadway items.
  • Review of manufacturers shop drawings.
  • Supervise development and distribution of standard and special design insertable sheets for the completion of roadway plan assemblies.
  • Provide technical expertise concerning related issues.
  • Analyze and interpret engineering data and information.
  • Prepare complete, clear and concise reports and recommendations.
  • Establish an effective line of communication between VDOT, contractors, government agencies and the public.
  • Investigate issues and resolve complaints.
  • Complete standard and special design tasks using appropriate design software.
  • Use MicroStation and other non-CADD applications for development and delivery of designs.
  • Use established VDOT policies and procedures in the development and delivery of engineering projects.
  • Ensure engineering projects are completed in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Plan, schedule and coordinate engineering program activities such that deliverables are met within the established scope and timeline.
  • Assist in the management of projects and tasks including development of and managing the scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports.
  • Complete multiple concurrent tasks and assignments, and report updates on their status.
  • Conduct research and provides technical assistance to customers on a variety of standard and special design issues especially those concerning roadside safety.
  • Serve as a member of standing committees such as the PCAV and the Roadside Safety Committee.
  • Manage special program initiatives and projects as assigned.
  • Serve and represent VDOT or assigned program area on various committees and work groups.
  • Use knowledge of roadway design principles and is able to develop and recommend standard and special design roadway items for a wide range of transportation projects.
  • Use decision quality skills to complete complex problems.
  • Use problem solving skills to determine appropriate action to resolve difficult challenges.
  • Demonstrate customer service and work habits that reflect the VDOT Values, and coordinate the flow of information both orally and in writing.
