About The Position

Under direction, performs complex professional engineering work in the research, planning, design, construction and installation of mechanical, hydraulic and other elements of a variety of capital construction, maintenance and/or asset management projects; provides engineering support to trade shop personnel in the diagnosis and resolution of mechanical system and equipment malfunctions and failures; and performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in mechanical, materials science or metallurgical engineering.
  • At least three years of progressively responsible professional mechanical engineering experience, preferably in a water utility.
  • A valid certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer issued by the State of Nevada is required for appointment to Mechanical Engineer P.E.
  • A valid Nevada driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.
  • Regularly required to sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle, feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms; and drive a vehicle.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret highly complex data, information and documents; analyze and solve complex problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; perform highly detailed work under changing, intensive deadlines, on multiple, concurrent tasks; work with constant interruptions, and interact with consulting engineers, contractors, representatives of other agencies and others encountered in the course of work.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Certified Reliability Engineer issued by the American Society for Quality (ASQ) is highly desirable.
  • 3 years of experience in design, construction, operation, and maintenance of complex water infrastructure as a Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Construction engineer.
  • Comfortable working in both field and office settings.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively engage with coworkers, contractors, vendors.
  • Experience with Enterprise Asset Management systems, asset management data records, and lifecycle planning to support replacement priorities.
  • Proven background in infrastructure improvement projects, including pipeline rehabilitation, cathodic protection, and trenchless technologies.
  • Experienced in water main condition assessments using advanced inspection and testing methods.
  • Experienced in the startup and commissioning of large potable water pumping plants.
  • Strong analytical skills, including KPIs and dashboards.
  • Familiarity with ESRI GIS.

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex professional engineering work in the research, planning, design, construction and installation of mechanical, hydraulic and other elements of a variety of capital construction, maintenance and/or asset management projects.
  • Provides engineering support to trade shop personnel in the diagnosis and resolution of mechanical system and equipment malfunctions and failures.
  • Makes complex engineering computations.
  • Prepares and/or checks and approves design plans and specifications for a wide variety of mechanical systems-related projects.
  • Performs difficult engineering research and analyzes complex engineering and mathematical problems, evaluating alternatives and recommending or adopting effective courses of action.
  • Exercises initiative and sound judgment in carrying work responsibilities within District standards and guidelines.
  • Uses a computer and standard engineering and business applications.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Establishes and maintains highly effective working relationships with other divisions and departments, consulting engineers, contractors, staff and others encountered in the course of work.
