About The Position

This position is part of the Newport News Shipbuilding Nuclear Reactor Servicing Engineering group, responsible for providing design and engineering support to fuel, refuel and defuel Navy nuclear reactors as well as servicing the same. Reactor Servicing Engineering offers a challenging, high paced, team environment with the opportunity to excel and endless possibilities for professional growth. This position is for a highly experienced engineer with a nuclear background in Navy or commercial nuclear work. This Engineer will be responsible for nuclear work instruction engineering, and technical cognizance of reactor servicing work, mentorship of staff, and providing oversight. This position requires a strong background in technical writing, nuclear problem resolution, and radiological control of nuclear work under the regulatory oversight of the Navy Nuclear Reactors branch of the DOE. Although a security clearance is not required to start, holding a present or past government security clearance is strongly desired. Reactor Servicing Engineering is well suited for any engineering discipline to include General Engineering, Mechanical, Structural, Electrical, Systems, Industrial, Nuclear, and others. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • US Citizenship Required
  • Final Clearance Required to Start
  • Strong background in technical writing
  • Strong background in nuclear problem resolution
  • Strong background in radiological control of nuclear work under the regulatory oversight of the Navy Nuclear Reactors branch of the DOE

Nice To Haves

  • Holding a present or good past government security clearance is strongly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, develops, and tests nuclear equipment and systems.
  • Conducts research on new materials of special interest in nuclear reactors.
  • Conducts studies related to the detection and control of radiation and radioactive contaminants.
  • Studies nuclear fuel cycle to define most economical uses of material and safest means of waste products disposal.
  • Other areas of research include radiation transport modeling, statistical analyses and performance metrics.
  • Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.
  • Responsible for nuclear work instruction engineering.
  • Responsible for technical cognizance of reactor servicing work.
  • Mentorship of staff.
  • Providing oversight.
