About The Position

This position is for the Nuclear Engineering department E86, supporting the Ford Class Carrier (CVN), Virginia Class (VCS), and Columbia Class (CLB) programs. The role involves hands-on waterfront engineering support and oversight for Reactor Plant and Propulsion Plant Systems, requiring a mechanical and/or structural background. The position operates on a 2nd shift. A successful candidate will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address technical issues during construction. Excellent communication and relational skills are necessary to interface with technical and non-technical personnel, government representatives, customers, and vendors. The role requires active participation on the waterfront to support onsite inspections and provide support to trades during construction.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • 9 years of relevant exempt experience with a Bachelor's Degree.
  • 7 years of relevant professional experience with a Master's Degree.
  • 4 years of experience with a Ph.D.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Problem Solving.
  • Critical Thinking.
  • Technical Writing.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Experience with various NNS shipbuilding programs (i.e., DDMS, SAP, i2, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • A comprehensive understanding of reactor plant and/or non-nuclear steam plant fluid systems and components.
  • Knowledge of reactor plant and/or steam plant cleanliness.
  • Familiarity with system test processes in a construction environment.
  • Experience with ship construction processes.
  • Awareness of lifting and handling requirements.
  • Experience with the procurement process and vendor liabilities (i.e., VIRs, VQs and QNs).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams of personnel with varying backgrounds and experience levels.

Responsibilities

  • Act as lead/backup for multiple components or areas of focus.
  • Performing onsite inspections of construction issues that arise during construction in support of resolving Technical Work Documents (e.g., eIRs, ERs).
  • Support material issue resolution through answering of QNs, VIRs, VQs.
  • Using technical writing skills to develop, review and approve technical work instruction/procedures (SCNIs, SCNPs, CCPIs, CCPPs).
  • Aid in development of junior engineers by providing insight on system operations, typical deckplate problem solving and other engineering processes.
  • Support production meetings on behalf of engineering to ensure timely resolutions and provide engineering insight on construction issues.
