About The Position
The Mechanical Engineer researches, plans, designs, develops, and tests mechanical and electromechanical products and systems, including instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal-hydraulic, or heat-transfer systems. The role applies research to systems used for production, transmission, measurement, and energy use. This position is part of the Robotics and Automation group in Department E66. The incumbent implements robotics and automation projects in shipyard areas and regularly communicates with engineers and designers across departments and the waterfront by email, phone, and in-person meetings. The position uses various robotics software and tools. It is a first-shift role, is not eligible for telework, may require travel up to 10% of the time, and requires U.S. citizenship. Relocation assistance is available.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience, or a master’s degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience, or a Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required by Newport News Shipbuilding.
- U.S. citizenship is required for this position.
Nice To Haves
- Manufacturing and systems engineering experience in an industrial or shipbuilding manufacturing environment, particularly shipbuilding manufacturing shops, and project management experience.
- Familiarity with major industrial six-axis robotic systems, such as ABB and Fanuc, and collaborative robots (Cobots).
- Familiarity with process automation controllers, such as Siemens, Allen Bradley, and Phoenix Contact, and HMI controllers.
- Experience developing robotic and automation solutions.
- Experience deploying robots in a production environment.
- Familiarity with Newport News Shipbuilding manufacturing and production processes.
