About The Position

This position serves as a technical expert for O41 Plant Engineering on Facilities’ mechanical systems, utility systems, process piping, fire protection/life safety systems, production equipment, and construction and repair specifications/requirements. The role involves providing technical leadership and direction to internal and external customers on mechanical-related matters to ensure inspections, routine maintenance, and construction projects are performed in accordance with applicable codes and NNS-specific specifications/requirements. Responsibilities include performing mechanical evaluations, conducting building/infrastructure assessments, and responding to emergent safety-related issues in a fast-paced, large industrial facility setting. The engineer will act as a lead in performing root cause analysis and developing corrective actions for unplanned events, and will direct the work assignments of consultants and contractors to ensure shipyard facilities are maintained safely. Support will be provided for design reviews of contractor project submittals to ensure compliance with codes, regulations, and best practices. The role also involves preparing or reviewing studies to support the Facilities’ Long Range Strategic Plan (LRSP) for critical systems and equipment, supporting business development and strategic initiatives, and serving as a mentor for younger engineers within the O41 Plant Engineering organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Fire Protection, Mechanical, or other related discipline.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build strong working relationships and rapport with NNS production, engineering, safety, maintenance, and contractor personnel
  • Knowledge of pertinent Building Codes, Virginia Codes, NFPA Standards/Codes, ASHRAE Recommendations, and OSHA regulations
  • Experience with heavy industrial facilities
  • Ability to gain and maintain a Confidential level security clearance
  • AutoCAD and Inventor experience

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical expert for O41 Plant Engineering on Facilities’ mechanical systems, utility systems, process piping, fire protection/life safety systems, production equipment, construction and repair specifications/requirements, etc.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to internal and external customers on mechanical-related matters to ensure inspections, routine maintenance, and construction projects are performed in accordance with applicable codes and NNS-specific specifications/requirements
  • Perform mechanical evaluations, conduct building/infrastructure assessments and respond to emergent safety related issues in a fast paced, large industrial facility setting.
  • Act as a lead in performing root cause analysis and developing robust corrective action to drive the resolution of unplanned events.
  • Direct work assignments of consultants and contractors to ensure shipyard facilities are maintained in a safe condition.
  • Support design reviews of contractor project submittals to ensure that proper design, installation and commissioning is accomplished while complying to applicable codes, regulations and best practices
  • Prepare and/or review studies and make recommendations supporting the development of the Facilities’ Long Range Strategic Plan (LRSP) for critical systems and equipment.
  • Support key strategic business development and strategic initiatives as assigned and developed. Ability to complete assigned tasks on schedule and within budget
  • Serve as a mentor for younger engineers within the O41 Plant Engineering organization and assigned Engineering team
