About The Position

This position supports department E86 Nuclear Propulsion – Construction and Process Engineering. This position is specifically for a Mechanical Engineer supporting the E86 Structural and Shielding group of the Virginia Class Submarine program. This Engineer will provide hands-on waterfront support, manufacturing engineering support and oversight for the construction of Reactor Plant structures. This Engineer ensures; information provided within the SOPs are consistent with the applicable technical authority documents and design yard drawings. Reviews engineering change documents for applicability and proper incorporation within local documents. Applies engineering and submarine construction knowledge towards the validation of welds, notes, and dimensions for VCS construction. Provides training to entry level engineers. Participates in development of processes and procedures. Interacts and collaborates with Engineers, Construction Trade Representatives, and Planning Personnel to ensure proper understanding of the work to be performed, by the requirements of the SOP. Regularly participates in collaboration meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice To Haves

  • A general understanding of the reactor plant construction process
  • Comprehension of structural drawings

  • Experience with NDT standards as well as welding standards
  • Experience with various NNS shipbuilding programs (i.e. SAP, i2, CATIA, Enovia etc.) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals or operation of product to include structures, mechanical and fixturing.
  • Analyzes tolerances, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.
  • Provide hands-on waterfront support, manufacturing engineering support and oversight for the construction of Reactor Plant structures.
