About The Position

Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures. This position is intended for E33 Coatings Technology and Material Engineering Department. The incumbent will perform engineering services and troubleshooting for surface preparation and coatings application across all programs supported by E33 at NNS and off-site. This position requires effective communication with internal and external customers (Electric Boat, Navy, Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Suppliers). The incumbent must be able and willing to work in an industrial environment and occasionally support off-shift and/or weekend duties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
  • Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • US Citizenship Required
