Engineer IV Tunnels

Mott MacDonaldNew York, NY
Hybrid

About The Position

Perform the role of Lead Engineer to develop advanced numerical models to evaluate complex underground works, including tunnels in soft ground and rock, large caverns, and deep excavations. Develop geotechnical interpretations to support underground engineering analysis and design, including assessing field investigation data and laboratory test results for soil and rock materials. Formulate appropriate non‑linear soil and rock constitutive relationships and parameters for use in numerical analyses of underground excavations. Develop design solutions, technical reports, specifications, and construction drawings for a wide range of underground projects, including new underground construction as well as the rehabilitation of existing underground facilities. Support senior technical leaders in developing project pursuits, including providing technical input and bid‑stage solutions for the preparation of technical proposals. Mentor and supervise other engineering staff to ensure best‑practice methodologies are applied and client objectives are met with high‑quality, technically sound solutions. Position reports into New York City, NY office; however, telecommuting from a home office is allowed. Less than 10% travel required for site investigation, inspection, and data collection.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering plus six (6) years of tunnel engineering experience.
  • Six (6) years of experience in analysis and design of underground structures including soft ground and rock tunnels using both tunnel boring machines, or conventional methods of construction.
  • Three (3) years of experience in performing numerical analysis and design of underground structures using typical industry standard numerical software including Plaxis 2D, Plaxis 3D, FLAC 2D, FLAC 3D, or similar numerical or soil-structure interaction analysis software.
  • Three (3) years of experience working with advanced soil and rock mechanics, ground investigation, and ground modeling.
  • Three (3) years of experience in developing geological models, including interpretation and development of soil and rock parameters for application in numerical modeling and design calculation.
  • Three (3) years of experience utilizing industry standard commercial software including gINT, LeapFrog, or RockSciences suite of analytical models.
  • Three (3) years of experience performing geotechnical analysis and design, and production of construction drawings and specifications for underground constructions in both soft ground and rock conditions, including transportation tunnels, water and wastewater tunnels, or deep shafts, as well as structural rehabilitation.
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree and eight (8) years of above described experience.
