About The Position

Zachry Group is hiring an Engineer IV Stress Analyst for its Downers Grove (Chicago) Design Center Office. The role performs mechanical stress engineering for piping systems and components, including formal and informal analyses, code compliance, support design, equipment nozzle loads, and preparation of stress evaluation reports. The engineer works with piping designers, project teams, clients, vendors, and construction personnel, and may serve as a lead engineer for portfolio clients and large capital projects. The position also involves field surveys, technical studies, proposal support, project schedule and budget management, and keeping procedures current with applicable regulations, codes, and standards. The position is based in an office environment and may require visits to client plant facilities. Client sites may have construction activities, moderate-to-high noise, equipment, vehicles, materials, communication equipment, tools, and people working nearby. The role requires effective communication, manual and finger dexterity, coordination, and the ability to safely lift, carry, and move objects. Travel and work in office and field environments are expected.

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • 10 or more years of experience in mechanical stress engineering.
  • At least 7 years of experience in the petroleum refining, chemical, or power industry.
  • Experience working with pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and pumps.
  • Experience with ASME Section I and VIII pressure vessel codes and B31.1 and/or B31.3 piping codes.
  • Experience with CAESAR II, FEATools, and NozzlePRO.
  • Ability to function as a qualified checker across various clients and projects.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prepare design concepts, technical documents, and drawing checks.

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with applying API Standards and Recommended Practices to refinery equipment specifications.
  • Experience with ASME Section I and VIII pressure vessel codes and B31.1 and B31.3 piping codes.
  • Ability and desire to work full time and put in extra time or effort when required.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze piping systems and components for thermal flexibility, vibration, supports, and other factors.
  • Ensure piping systems conform to applicable codes and client standards.
  • Perform formal ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 piping stress analyses using CAESAR II.
  • Conduct informal visual stress analyses for large- and small-bore piping systems.
  • Work with piping designers to optimize routing and specify required pipe supports.
  • Specify engineered support equipment, including expansion bellows, spring cans, constant-tension hangers, snubbers, and engineered piping supports; review vendor equipment design documents.
