About The Position

Join CDOT's Staff Bridge team and help model, analyze, and design bridges, retaining walls, and other highway structures. By doing so, you will be helping to ensure better performing, economical, and resilient infrastructure throughout Colorado. In this role, you'll work alongside experienced structural engineers to develop plans, specifications, cost estimates, and engineering analyses for new construction, rehabilitation, and repair projects. You'll gain hands-on experience applying bridge design standards, engineering codes, and structural design principles while contributing to the development of departmental standards and specifications. Requirements

  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.
  • A current valid driver’s license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired for Engineer-In-Training positions must also licensure as a professional engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of initial appointment to an EIT position.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis and assist with the design and detailing of bridges, retaining walls, signs, signals, and other highway structures under the guidance of licensed Professional Engineers.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, structural plans, specifications, quantity estimates, reports, and supporting design documentation using applicable engineering software, AASHTO requirements, and CDOT standards.
  • Assist with bridge load ratings, quality assurance reviews of structural designs, and evaluations of existing structures to support rehabilitation, maintenance, and overload assessments.
  • Develop bridge layouts, cost estimates, and structure selection reports while supporting engineering studies and project decision-making.
  • Collaborate with engineers, CAD technicians, and project stakeholders to gather design information, coordinate project activities, and provide structural engineering support throughout project development.
  • Provide engineering support during construction by reviewing shop drawings, assisting with field inspections, interpreting plans and specifications, and helping resolve construction-related issues.
  • Participate in field visits to inspect structures, collect site data, evaluate existing conditions, and support the development of design and repair solutions.
  • Assist with structural asset management activities, including bridge inspections, data collection, condition assessments, and reporting to support infrastructure planning and maintenance.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of CDOT structural engineering standards, specifications, and technical guidance.
  • Continue developing technical expertise through on-the-job training, independent study, and participation in engineering training and professional development opportunities.
