About The Position

This position will serve as Division 14 Utility Engineer. The Position will be responsible for all utility relocation activities within the Division including but not limited to management of staff, project development and design relocation efforts and project management, utility encroachment review and processing, reimbursable agreement review and processing, and post let construction related relocation efforts. The position will train and provide guidance to subordinate engineers, transportation engineering associates, and cooperative engineering education students concerning the Utilities Unit’s responsibilities, policies, and procedures. In addition to this, the position supports the Division Construction offices, Right of Way personnel and utility owners to accommodate the successful relocation of utility facilities during the project’s construction phase. This support includes the review and approval of material submittals, shop drawings, and contractor submitted designs; and construction review of design changes in the field or unforeseen conditions requiring additional utility mitigation or relocation which may require the development of revised utility construction plans and special provisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Considerable knowledge of NCDOT Utility Unit policies and procedures
  • Experience with various NCDOT software programs, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Outlook, SAP, and FTS.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret utility relocation plans and construction plans and effectively communicate their meaning to the other NCDOT agencies, utility owners, and the public
  • Experience in managing utility consultants used for assistance in utility relocation and planning
  • Experience in processing and coordinating complex utility relocation efforts for transportation projects
