About The Position

Mortenson is seeking an Engineer III or IV – Wind Collection responsible for supporting preliminary and detailed engineering assignments. This role involves supporting Engineer of Record design packages and construction support for wind collection, medium voltage distribution systems, and renewable projects up to 500kV. The candidate will collaborate with Engineering Project Managers, Design Phase Managers, Project Managers, other engineering/design team members, and customers to create and coordinate deliverables, perform quality control, and lead design efforts. This position is open to both Engineer III and IV levels, with compensation based on experience and location. Hiring locations include Denver, CO; Minneapolis, MN; Fargo, ND; and San Antonio, TX.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or related Engineering program.
• Working knowledge of or familiarity with Engineering software packages and Project Controls software (Procore).
• Acquired knowledge in system integration, product adaptation, and design development for systems.
• Work experience acquired with an electrical background or acquired industry knowledge from time in the electrical business or electrician/construction.
• Design optimization skills considering technical parameters and economic feedback.
• Working knowledge of or familiarity with software packages: CYMCAP, CDEGS, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, ArcGIS/QGIS, etc.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Microsoft Excel experience to track and analyze different components and combinations.
• Experienced in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
• Understanding of discipline specific technical designs, QA/QC procedures, and engineering policies.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.
• Engineer III Minimum Qualifications: Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification or achievement of EIT within 6 months of entering position with the expectation of achieving a PE license in the future.
• Engineer III Minimum Qualifications: 4+ years of related experience.
• Engineer IV Minimum Qualifications: Professional Engineering (PE) license.
• Engineer IV Minimum Qualifications: 7+ years of related experience.

Nice To Haves

• Degree from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.
• Preference given for knowledge focused on power systems and substations.
• Experience in the T&D industry, preference given for design experience in the Energy Storage, Solar, Wind industry.
• Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred for Engineer III.
• With PE license: Engineer III salary range is $108,700 - $146,700.
• With PE license: Engineer IV salary range is $122,500 - $183,800.

Responsibilities

• Support preliminary and detailed engineering assignments.
• Support Engineer of Record design packages and construction support for wind collection, medium voltage distribution systems, and renewable projects through 500kV.
• Work closely with Engineering Project Managers, Design Phase Managers, Project Managers, other engineering/design team members, and customers to create and coordinate deliverables.
• Perform quality control and lead design efforts.
• Work with utility-scale substation and/or wind customers to integrate storage and renewable generation assets.
• Develop innovative designs to optimize cost and performance.
• Interface and present to multiple stakeholders.
• Provide technical support for proposals, estimating, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction.
• Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, Project Managers, and Design Phase Managers.
• Participate in project teams that execute design, analysis, or evaluation of projects.
• Perform lead engineer tasks on 1-3 large design projects.
• Mentor and guide other Engineering Professionals.
• Perform technical review, approval, and selection of equipment vendor quotes.
• Collect and evaluate data to recommend courses of action.
• Assure proper documentation of technical data.
• Perform data analysis and engineering tasks, calculations, and studies for preliminary and detailed designs.
• Develop technical specifications.
• Provide direction and guidance to drafters and designers.
• Direct the flow of drafting and designer duties to ensure design schedules are met.
• Provide project status updates to the project engineer.
• Handle multiple projects and provide detailed design packages compliant with engineering design standards and safety codes.
• Review engineering work for accuracy (aiming for 80% first-time review correctness).
• Verify construction aligns with civil and protection engineering design drawings.
• Develop and evaluate technical requirements for fabrication and construction tender packages.
• Create detailed designs aligned with customer requirements and Mortenson's best practice standards.
