About The Position

This posting is for two positions, 60027029 and 60029347. The Roadway Design Unit is comprised of a diverse team whose primary purposes are to produce and review roadway design plans, lighting and electrical plans, and provide technical expertise on these subjects to internal and external partners. We are looking for an Engineer II who will serve on the Research, Standards & Innovation Team within the Specialty Functions Group. In this role you will: •Perform research for responses to questions and/or comments on the Roadway Design Manual. •Coordinate with NCDOT Roadway Design Leadership, private engineering firms and the Roadway Design Manual committee on changes to the Roadway Design Manual based on updated guidance, NCDOT Policies and Procedures, and comments from subject matter experts. •Assist in the creation of training materials for design guidance, policy, and procedures and participate in presentations of training materials. •Maintain current knowledge of roadway design research, design guidance, and practices; generate analytical reports. •Develop and review roadway design plans and details to ensure compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles (especially as it relates to highway design), AASHTO guidance, NCDOT Roadway Design Manual, NCDOT Standard Drawings and Specifications, and NCDOT policies and procedures.
  • Experience developing and/or reviewing engineered design plans and details to determine compliance and compatibility with construction and engineering principles and maintenance standards, codes, designs, and statutes.
  • Demonstrated ability performing research and coordinating with multidisciplinary staff on topics related to highway design, and effectively communicating technical information in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
  • Knowledge of Bentley highway design software and workspaces (MicroStation, Geopak, Corridor and Open Roads Designer (ORD)).
  • Demonstrated ability facilitating meetings and establishing and tracking progress of tasks and deliverables to ensure timely completion.
