Engineer II - Substation Controls

About The Position

Puget Sound Energy's Engineering Operations team is seeking a qualified candidate to fill an open Engineer II - Substation Controls position. This role is responsible for designing controls systems for substations with voltages of 12kV and above. The control systems encompass all wiring for switchyard equipment, control house, and control panel devices up to the protective relays. Controls engineers are also responsible for field support and developing project construction drawings, including detailed schematics and wiring diagrams, to integrate relays and other electrical components for operating, protecting, and automating the electrical grid. Project work includes planned programs like "brownfield" substation equipment upgrades and SCADA integration, new "greenfield" substation design, and emergency equipment replacements. This role is within the Substation Engineering group and requires close coordination with other PSE engineering teams, including System Protection and Relay Engineering, and Substation Design. Under minimal supervision, the engineer will prepare engineering plans, designs, specifications, standards, cost estimates, system studies, and other evaluations. The engineer will also work on project teams to support the successful completion of projects aimed at reinforcing energy delivery or power generation systems, while also growing their technical and managerial knowledge of PSE processes and systems. The role also supports emergency response operations when needed. The position upholds safety compliance standards and promotes a culture of total safety. This job is considered "safety sensitive" and is subject to pre-employment drug screening.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or PE license in electrical, mechanical, civil or other appropriate engineering field. A PE license may qualify in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience in planning, design, specification preparation, technical field work, project cost estimating and scheduling (typically achieved after three (3) or more years practice as a degreed engineer).
  • Organization, documentation, prioritization, and project management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with both internal and external customers on projects.
  • Familiar with codes and equipment utilized in the design and operation of utility systems.
  • Experience with coordinating external consultants in the execution of a project.
  • Possession of EIT certificate and ability to acquire PE license.
  • Knowledge of engineering economics and utility accounting practices.
  • MicroStation or AutoCAD experience.

  • Supports emergency response work as requested including immediate and extended restoration efforts driven by weather and other system failures.
  • May coordinate the work of engineering assistants, technicians, or others who assist in specific assignments (including contractors/consultants).
