About The Position

The Photogrammetry Unit acquires aerial imagery and generates geospatial information products used for transportation planning, design, and construction. The unit also partners with different government agencies for statewide orthophotography and aerial LiDAR elevation data programs serving as NCDOT's subject matter experts for aerial surveying. This role provides basic level engineering support in the management and oversight for the planning and production of basic photogrammetric mapping and lidar mapping projects used for functional design, preliminary design, final design, and construction earthwork pay quantities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability perceiving overlapping aerial imagery stereoscopically in three dimensions and interpreting planimetric and terrain features relatively correctly.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of professional transportation and geomatics engineering used in photogrammetric mapping, lidar mapping, GPS surveying, conventional surveying, and GIS as related to highway location, design, and construction.
  • Experience using and operating equipment and software associated with photogrammetry, lidar, and engineering surveys.
  • Experience generating, reviewing, and analyzing geospatial data products, Aerotriangulation Reports, Lidar Mapping Reports, and Airborne Survey Reports to ensure compliance with federal and/or state rules, standards, and guidelines.
  • Experience utilizing basic problem analysis and problem solving in mathematics and sciences associated with transportation and/or mapping.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical review of all tasks involved in the preparation, analysis, and delivery of planimetric and terrain data.
  • Provide technical review of all earthwork terrain analysis and earthwork calculations performed on assigned construction projects.
  • Work independently occasionally on specialized geospatial projects.
  • Provide routine problem analysis, decision-making (subject to review), and the effective utilization of staff and resources.
  • Read and review all photogrammetric mapping and construction earthwork project assignments and maintain detailed records.
  • Communicate technical specifications and parameters to staff.
  • Perform a technical review on all assigned projects.
  • Monitor and perform a technical review on the performance of other employees.
  • Set up and/or define appropriate project specifications and parameters on standard projects.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Perform a technical review of all Aero triangulation adjustments for control densification.
  • Train and develop Engineering Technicians on the basic aspects of photogrammetric and lidar mapping processes, photogrammetric stereo compilation hardware and software, and procedures.
