About The Position

This position carries out the responsibilities of aesthetic and landscape architectural project design, administration, aesthetic and environmental assessment/implementation, and the management of private engineering firms to carry out landscape architectural plan development. They are responsible for the preparation of site plans, working drawings, specifications, cost estimates, construction and material inspection, project review, and approval. A thorough knowledge of the technical and creative use of engineering and landscape architectural principles must be applied in safe efficient manner in order to protect the environment and for the greater health and welfare of the general public. Implementation of work must be carried out incorporating aesthetic and environmental goals established by the Department and the Roadside Environmental Unit. This includes application of aesthetic design guidelines for bridges and infrastructure, plan development for NEPA historic mitigation, roadside re-vegetation, best practices of roadside maintenance, sustainable landscape implementation, as well as, site plans for roadside facilities such as rest areas and associated welcome and visitor centers.

Requirements

  • Professional knowledge of the principles and practices of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Architecture.
  • Proficiency in visualization engineering utilizing MicroStation, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, ArcGIS, Sketchup, and other design software packages.
  • Experience developing plans for construction including development of design plans, specifications, estimates, construction details, and graphic presentation plans.
  • Experience establishing project goals, budgets, timelines, tasks, and responsibilities.
  • Experience calculating quantities of materials from plans which may include groundcovers, trees, shrubs, mulch, water, topsoil, stone, drainage pipe, drop inlets, reforestation, selective vegetation removal, retaining wall, concrete, sidewalk, patio pavers, irrigation, lighting, fencing, and site signage.
  • Experience creating engineer’s estimates for site and landscape development work included in the project.
  • Experience analyzing and delineating project impacts on the visual environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
