About The Position

Main Machinery Engineer will be responsible for the design, manufacture, test, delivery, and sustainment of VIRGINIA Class turbine generators. Challenging opportunities exist within the engineered components ship service turbine generator (SSTG) design group and construction group where engineers will practice engineering principles associated with power generation, rotating machinery, and controls to accomplish essential shipbuilding work. The individual will be required to interface with EB Engineering and Design departments, Equipment Vendors, Customers (Naval Sea Systems Command and Naval Nuclear Laboratory), Shipyard Personnel, and Ship’s Force. The ability to understand and interpret engineering drawings, technical reports, and procedures is required. Strong technical writing and communication skills are required. Travel will be required to support testing and build evolutions at Quonset Point, Vendor sites, Newport News Shipyard, and Naval shipyards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of science degree (or higher) in Mechanical, electrical, or aeronautical/aerospace engineering
  • 0-4 years post-graduate engineering experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense/war.
  • Knowledge in submarine design and/or construction
  • Mechano-electrical engineering experience

Responsibilities

  • Review and approval of Vendor deliverables and reports.
  • Evaluate design changes, including performance of calculations when necessary, to ensure compliance with specifications, standards, contractual requirements, etc.
  • Deck-plate support of shipyard test evolutions and resolution of emergent issues.
  • Interface with various departments as the cognizant engineer to support design reviews, arrangements, development/maintenance of logistic products, procurement, operations, ship integration, test evolutions, and repair efforts.
  • Develop, write, and peer review technical dispositions.
  • Managing multiple concurrent tasks with established deadlines.
  • Consult subject matter experts and/or shipyard personnel, when necessary, in the resolution of issues.
  • Proactive engagement with vendors, both remotely and on-site, to assist in troubleshooting as well as development and implementation of manufacturing process changes to overcome barriers and clear bottlenecks to deliver products on time.
