This announcement will be used to establish a pool of eligible candidates for Engineer vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months within the Facilities Division of BART's Office of Infrastructure Delivery. Engineers in the Facilities Division work at the intersection of capital project delivery, preventative maintenance, and construction maintenance, making every day both challenging and rewarding. We are seeking talented engineers with backgrounds in preventative maintenance and construction maintenance. Engineers in this pool will support the planning, design, and delivery of projects related to the development and modification of BART's facility infrastructure and systems. While all engineering disciplines are welcomed, candidates with education and experience in the maintenance branch of engineering are strongly preferred. Successful candidates will bring a blend of field and office experience, thrive in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment, and demonstrate the versatility to work across project delivery and maintenance functions. Please note, off-shift and weekend availability is required when operational needs demand it.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of (full-time equivalent) verifiable engineering design and construction project experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform engineering work effectively in both office and field environments, adapting seamlessly between design tasks and hands-on site engagement
  • A solid foundational understanding of engineering principles paired with a genuine curiosity and commitment to staying current with emerging technologies, industry developments, and evolving best practices
  • Familiarity with a variety of maintenance methodologies, including preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance, and the ability to determine and apply the most appropriate approach to diverse equipment and systems
  • Proven ability to work independently on smaller, well-defined projects, including the development of drawings, specifications, and engineering estimates for construction contracts with minimal oversight
  • Excellent analytical and creative problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated track record of identifying root causes and implementing effective, lasting solutions in complex engineering environments
  • Working knowledge of project control tools, including scheduling software, risk registers, earned value management, and cost projection methodologies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, including the capacity to deliver clear presentations, author concise and accurate technical reports, and translate complex or highly technical issues for non-technical BART management and leadership audiences
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams, including the ability to coordinate across engineering, operations, construction, and administrative functions
  • Knowledge of Principles and practices of engineering in assigned discipline area
  • Knowledge of Operations, services and activities of an engineering design and construction program
  • Knowledge of Principles and practices of engineering cost estimating

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the planning, design, and construction of improvements to BART's facilities infrastructure and facility systems
  • Developing drawings, specifications, and engineering estimates for construction contracts on well-defined, smaller-scale projects with a high degree of independence
  • Applying preventative and corrective maintenance engineering principles to a diverse inventory of BART equipment and systems
  • Contributing to project controls activities, including the development and monitoring of schedules, risk registers, earned value tracking, and cost projections
  • Serving as a technical resource for field and construction crews, troubleshooting complex issues in real-time, including during off-hours when critical systems require immediate attention
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams composed of engineers, planners, contractors, and operations staff
  • Engaging with BART leadership, management, and external stakeholders through clear, concise technical communication
  • Performs a variety of professional engineering duties related to the subject department.
  • Duties may include preparing engineering specifications, preliminary cost estimates, engineering drawings, sketches, calculations and analyses.
  • Prepares engineering designs, specifications, costs and quantity estimates for engineering construction projects; prepares and/or reviews the adequacy and accuracy of computations.
  • Assists in the establishment of schedules and methods for providing engineering project oversight services; responsible for the verification of quantities of materials and adherence to specifications; may recommend resources to be allocated.
  • Monitors work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; evaluates proposed changes to approved plans and specifications.
  • Recommends approval of and submits contractor’s progress payment applications; performs audits of contractor and suppliers to ensure adherence to established policies procedures.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence on project matters including Inspector’s Daily Reports, monthly and final completion reports, contract modifications negotiations, field and design engineering changes, and correspondence with the contractor on fulfillment of requirements.
  • Discusses and coordinates engineering design or construction project activities with design engineering staff and other affected engineering personnel.
  • Maintains awareness of progress on assigned engineering design or construction projects to ensure compliance with designated time and cost schedules.
  • Provides assistance to inspectors in the interpretation of plans and resolution of problems during construction.
  • Reviews construction design plans to evaluate potential construction problems; monitors construction project expenditures.
  • Utilizes a variety of engineering programs and application including CADD.
  • Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of engineering design and construction.
  • Conducts field inspections; ensures compliance with specifications.
