Engineer - Design, Junior

Linamar CorporationFletcher, NC

About The Position

The Junior Design Engineer supports High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) operations by designing and documenting support fixtures, gauges, and manufacturing aids used throughout the casting process. This role focuses on marking stands, quench stands, biscuit stands, handling fixtures, inspection gauges, and cell layout updates to improve safety, efficiency, quality, and ergonomics. The engineer will convert concepts and sketches into detailed CAD models and production-ready drawings, support manufacturing and quality teams, and assist with prototyping and testing. Designs must meet HPDC process requirements, plant standards, quality and safety regulations.

Requirements

  • Completion of a two-to-three-year college program in engineering design and drafting technology or in a related field is required or completion of a three-to-four-year apprenticeship program or four to five years of related experience plus completion of college or industry courses in drafting is required.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English fluently.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet or exceed the company’s attendance standards.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions given.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, SolidWorks or related 3D engineering modeling software, and Microsoft Office (Excel).
  • Ability to read schematics, assembly drawings, blueprints, product specifications and geometric dimensioning tolerance (GD&T).
  • Ability to work in a team environment to share opinions with co-workers, colleagues and peers about successful projects, problematic projects and drafting techniques. Meet with engineers, designers, other drafting professionals and various consultants to obtain additional information, clarification and feedback about drawings and to discuss projects' challenges.
  • Ability to work independently while ensuring work meets the designers', engineers', technologists’ or operators’ vision.

Responsibilities

  • Design and detail HPDC support fixtures and tooling, including marking and identification stands, quench stands and cooling fixtures, biscuit stands and scrap handling fixtures, part handling and transfer stands, and simple manufacturing aids and workstations.
  • Design and document inspection gauges, checking fixtures, and reference tools used for quality verification.
  • Develop and maintain HPDC cell layouts, including die casting machines, trim presses, quench stations, inspection stations, material flow and operator access.
  • Create fully detailed 3D models and 2D drawings including GD&T, materials, finishes, weld details, and safety notes.
  • Convert sketches, redlines, and verbal concepts into accurate CAD designs using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent software.
  • Support prototype builds and shop trials, including occasional hands-on work for fit-up, testing, and validation.
  • Use 3D printing to produce simple prototypes, ergonomic mockups, or gauge concepts.
  • Ensure fixtures and gauges meet HPDC thermal, contamination, and durability requirements, are safe and ergonomic for operators, and comply with quality system procedures and plant standards.
  • Maintain and control engineering documentation, ensuring correct revision levels and proper release of drawings.
  • Support Manufacturing, Quality, and Process Engineering teams with process documentation, continuous improvement activities, and fixture modifications and updates.
  • Coordinate with internal fabrication teams and external suppliers to clarify design intent and resolve build issues.
  • Update and control plant and cell layout drawings as equipment or process changes occur.
  • Adhere to all Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations.
  • Perform occasional hands-on work for prototyping and testing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
