About The Position

The Engineer, Critical Facilities ensures the operational continuity and reliability of critical infrastructure across data centers, communication hubs, and other mission-critical facilities. This role independently manages electrical, mechanical, HVAC, life safety, and backup power systems to maintain uninterrupted service and compliance with safety standards. The Engineer leads maintenance activities, incident response, root cause analysis, and infrastructure improvement projects in partnership with technicians, vendors, and facility operations teams. Success is measured through operational uptime, system integrity, compliance with maintenance procedures, and effective cross-functional execution. This role directly supports organizational infrastructure stability and service delivery to customers by preventing downtime and managing critical facility operations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma with Technical Training in Electrical or Mechanical Systems
  • Electrical Engineering: Knowledge of electrical distribution, UPS, generators, and critical power systems
  • Facility Engineering: Ability to evaluate facility systems, identify deficiencies, and manage engineering solutions
  • Mechanical/HVAC Systems: Working knowledge of HVAC, cooling, and mechanical systems in critical environments
  • Troubleshooting: Ability to identify, diagnose, and resolve facility and infrastructure issues efficiently
  • Preventive Maintenance: Ability to plan, execute, and oversee scheduled maintenance procedures and operational standards
  • Vendor Management: Ability to manage contractors and service providers to ensure quality work and compliance
  • CMMS / Maintenance Systems: Experience using maintenance management systems to manage work orders, repairs, and asset records
  • Project Management: Ability to lead and participate in infrastructure upgrades and facility improvement projects
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Ability to analyze situations, make sound decisions, and respond effectively to operational challenges
  • Documentation Management: Ability to maintain accurate records, procedures, inspection reports, and operational documentation

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Facilities Management, or Related Field; or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or Related Discipline
  • 2–4 years of experience in each of the following areas: Mechanical/HVAC, electrical, or a combination of the two
  • Data center or critical facilities operations, preferably in the telecommunications industry
  • Managing vendor work, quality control, and coordination for facility equipment and systems
  • Participating in preventive maintenance, incident response, and compliance activities for facility infrastructure
  • Data Center Management: Experience managing operations and systems in a data center or telecommunications facility environment
  • Infrastructure Design: Familiarity with infrastructure design principles and participation in new construction or remodeling
  • Safety Training Programs: Experience delivering or supporting life safety and compliance training for technical staff
  • Technical Writing: Ability to produce clear operational procedures, incident reports, and engineering documentation
  • Uptime Institute Certified Reliability Leader (CRL) or Accredited Tier Specialist: Knowledge of data center and critical facility operational standards and best practices
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30: Knowledge of workplace safety standards and safe work practices in operational environments
  • LEED, CFM, FMP, or MCE: Professional certification in facilities management, energy, or critical environments
  • Electrical, HVAC, or Mechanical Trade Certification: Demonstrated technical competency in electrical, HVAC, or mechanical systems maintenance

Responsibilities

  • Manage operational execution of processes and procedures to maintain 100% uptime across electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and building control systems
  • Review and evaluate engineering designs and operational performance to identify and respond to system shortcomings and emergencies
  • Provide training and guidance to technicians and facility staff to ensure compliance with life safety and critical environment procedures
  • Lead and participate in facility improvement projects, infrastructure upgrades, new system construction, and commissioning activities
  • Conduct site inspections, equipment audits, and documentation updates to identify deficiencies and maintain accurate asset and infrastructure records
  • Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to track work orders, maintenance schedules, repairs, and generate operational reports
  • Also responsible for other duties/projects as assigned by business management as needed
