About The Position

Toyota’s Battery Production Engineering Division is seeking a passionate, driven, and highly motivated Production Engineer to join the BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) implementation team. This role supports the successful launch of North America’s first EV production site for prismatic lithium-ion battery cells and battery modules, helping power Toyota’s future electric vehicle production. The primary responsibility of this position is to prepare, coordinate, procure, install, and launch battery manufacturing equipment in support of new model launches. This position will be located on-site at TBMNC in Liberty, North Carolina, and will report to an Engineering Manager for BEV Battery/Cell Manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or 5+ years of equivalent manufacturing experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in manufacturing, with strong experience in production preparation, manufacturing execution, and capital project implementation from initial planning through start of production.
  • Experience in the development, specification, procurement, installation, commissioning, and/or operation of a plant intended for the manufacture of batteries for electrified vehicle drivetrains or similar.
  • Experience creating and implementing manufacturing processes, including takt time studies, line balancing, cycle time reduction, standardized work, and job safety analysis.
  • Experience executing and managing large capital projects, preferably over $10M, including schedule creation and management, budget creation and management, milestone tracking, KPI tracking, and support from project creation through completion.
  • AutoCAD or other CAD software experience, including the ability to read, interpret, design, and modify machine, engineering, and structural drawings.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% for domestic and international business travel.
  • Ability to work weekends, shutdown periods such as July and December holidays, and up to 25% overtime as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree, such as MS in Engineering or an MBA or 10+ years of automotive/battery experience.
  • TPS (Toyota Production System) experience.
  • TBP (Toyota Business Practices) experience, with emphasis on problem solving.
  • New Product/model launch experience utilizing Master Operating Plan.
  • Experience in Quality with ability to find root cause of chronic problems.
  • Experience in the manufacturing of battery cells or in a chemical facility.
  • Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) experience in reading, editing, and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop installation and trials schedules for the shop that cover all critical milestones, including vendor buyoff, shipping, commissioning, production and maintenance training, and confirmation trials.
  • Support the preparation and presentation of bid packs for equipment installation to general contractors, and help review bids based on cost, manpower, skill, and commitment to schedule.
  • Lead construction and battery equipment installation activities, including schedule development, contractor and vendor coordination, safety audits, and resolution of day-to-day issues.
  • Coordinate procurement and readiness of key equipment and components, including main machines, supply parts, auxiliary equipment, and other required materials.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain highly automated equipment, including lasers and robots.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, productivity, ergonomics, and scrap; develop action plans to not only meet KPIs but exceed them.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to plan and execute project activities safely and on time, engaging Production, Quality, Maintenance and other teams to align stakeholders on key issues.
  • Provide frequent project status updates and KPI reporting to senior management, including executive-level communication on overall project status, safety, schedule, critical activities, plan-versus-actual results, and key issue escalation.
  • Develop reflection documents for events that caused safety hazards, project delays, or other issues, and share them with cross-functional teams to support collective learning and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor co-ops and engineers to support their technical and personal growth and challenge them to apply their skills to complex project problems.
