About The Position

The Engineering Assistant supports the City Engineer in the planning, coordination, and execution of engineering activities and public works projects. This position performs technical, administrative, and field support tasks related to infrastructure projects, plan reviews, inspections, permitting, and recordkeeping. The Engineering Assistant helps ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations while assisting in the efficient operation of the Engineering Division.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and construction methods.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to public works and development.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors, and the public.
  • Basic problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and reliability.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of experience in engineering support, construction, or public works preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must be fluent in the English language; Spanish is a plus.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer Intern (EI) certification is a plus but not required.
  • Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the City Engineer with the planning, design, and coordination of public works and infrastructure projects, including roads, drainage, water, and sewer systems.
  • Review engineering plans, site plans, subdivision plats, and permit applications for completeness and compliance.
  • Provide support in the review of right-of-way permits and maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans.
  • Perform field inspections of construction and right-of-way projects to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain records, reports, logs, and documentation related to engineering projects and inspections.
  • Assist in responding to constituent complaints related to right-of-way, drainage, and infrastructure concerns.
  • Coordinate with contractors, developers, consultants, and other governmental agencies as directed.
  • Assist with data entry and maintenance of the City’s permit and inspection tracking systems.
  • Support the preparation of cost estimates, project specifications, and bid/procurement documents.
  • Assist in budget tracking and documentation for engineering projects.
  • Provide technical and administrative support for grant applications, reports, and special projects.
  • Participate in Development Review Committee meetings as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining organized and secure engineering records and files in City systems.
  • Support emergency management operations and participate in City-sponsored events as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
