About The Position

Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team, delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems, and solar collector substations. Lead discipline work, perform responsible charge engineering duties, manage project schedules and budgets, and support proposal development, project cost estimating, and business development efforts.

Requirements

At least 8 years of experience as a practicing engineer.
Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited engineering program, an approved NCEES evaluation of non-ABET credentials, or graduation from a master’s or doctoral engineering program at an institution with EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering programs.
Licensed Professional Engineer.
Advanced understanding of protection and control fundamentals as applied to utility substations and transmission line equipment.
Expertise designing protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment and associated settings.
Advanced understanding of SCADA communication design.
Understanding of substation design, including equipment arrangements.
Expertise in project management principles.
Ability to lead a team of engineers and designers.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and provide leadership to team members.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a customer-oriented approach.
Ability to think creatively and logically to resolve design and development problems.
Ability to work with individuals from varied socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
Proficiency in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Good written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight.
Lead discipline work on projects and perform responsible charge engineering duties.
Provide technical direction on complex engineering and technical problems for utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems, and solar collector substations.
Design protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor, and transformer protection schemes and associated settings.
Create processes to improve P&C designs, including P&C one- and three-lines, AC/DC schematics, panel drawings, and wiring diagrams.
Lead a team of engineers and designers.
Create quality control checklists for substation P&C design project scopes, estimates, budgets, one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA.
Create and report on voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination studies.
Perform calculations and studies using client-specified software and standards.
Write specifications and implement them on engineering drawings.
Oversee junior staff and mentor designers and drafters.
Create processes to ensure design accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards.
Collaborate and communicate with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clients.
Visit sites, advise on physical engineering issues, and modify designs to resolve construction issues.
Manage project budgets and schedules.
Support proposal development, project cost estimating, and business development efforts.
