About The Position

Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team, delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems, and solar collector substations. The incumbent is expected to lead discipline work, perform responsible-charge engineering duties, manage project schedules and budgets, and support proposal development and project cost estimating. The role includes developing and reviewing protection and control designs for utility stations through 500 kV, performing engineering studies and calculations, guiding junior staff, coordinating with internal and external project stakeholders, and providing site support during construction.

Requirements

5 to 7 years of experience as a practicing engineer.
Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited engineering program, an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES, or graduation from a master’s or doctoral engineering program at an institution with EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering programs.
Licensed Professional Engineer or able to become licensed within one year.
Advanced understanding of protection and control fundamentals for utility substations and transmission-line equipment.
Proficiency designing protection schemes for substation and transmission-line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor, and transformer schemes and associated settings.
Advanced understanding of SCADA communication design.
Ability to lead a team of engineers and designers as lead engineer.
Proficiency in project-management principles.
Basic understanding of substation design, including equipment arrangements.
Ability to research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations, and prepare and present recommendations.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work independently, work in a team, and maintain customer orientation.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and provide leadership to team members.
Ability to think creatively and logically to resolve design and development problems.
Ability to work with individuals from varied socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

Responsibilities

Lead discipline work for projects and perform responsible-charge engineering duties.
Provide technical direction on complex engineering and technical problems involving utility substations, battery energy storage systems, and solar collector substations.
Create protection and control design scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects.
Read, interpret, design, and engineer protection and control designs for utility stations through 500 kV, including one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA.
Perform studies and prepare reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination.
Perform calculations and studies using client-specified software and standards.
Oversee junior staff and mentor designers and drafters.
Check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards.
Collaborate and communicate with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clients.
Visit sites, advise on protection and control engineering issues, and modify designs to resolve construction issues.
Manage project budgets and schedules.
Support proposal development and project cost estimating.
