About The Position

At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. DOTD is seeking an Engineer 3-5 to support transportation projects and programs. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews. No prior engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series. Positions are located in SULPHUR, and reports to Project Engineer. This vacancy is being advertised under two separate postings: Engineer Intern Applicant -Engineer Intern 2 and Engineer 3–5.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.
  • Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment.
  • The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.
  • Louisiana Professional Engineer licenses are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with bridge and structural design activities for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Reviews or prepares plans, calculations, specifications, estimates, and structural details.
  • Performs or assists with bridge load ratings, structural evaluations, or bridge preservation activities.
  • Provides technical support related to bridge rehabilitation, replacement, preservation, or new capacity projects.
  • Coordinates with project managers, consultants, districts, construction staff, and other internal or external partners.
  • Reviews bridge-related project documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Supports development or maintenance of design guidance, standards, procedures, or technical documents.
  • Assists with emergency response or technical reviews involving bridge or structural concerns.
