About The Position

As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will collaborate with engineers and scientists on various projects including hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research, and propulsion systems for programs such as Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems, and the International Space Station. This role specifically supports the Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) program at NASA, focusing on advancing nuclear rocket engine technology. The engineer will engage in technology maturation and system engineering activities for the Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) project, with a focus on Reactor and Core Components (RCC), working both independently and as part of an integrated team.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a Master's degree program at an ABET accredited institution in Nuclear, Aerospace, or related engineering degree field
  • Basic understanding of the materials and nuclear properties of nuclear reactor cores (Nuclear Reactor Core Materials)
  • Ability to understand the nuclear, chemical, and mechanical effects of fuel under varying operational conditions (Nuclear Fuel Performance)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Power-Point, Excel, and Word
  • Experience using computer programming to efficiently solve engineering problems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly motivated, flexible and willing to shift focus areas to meet volatile customer requirements
  • Ability to provide own transportation
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Access to an automobile and ability to drive yourself to work locations
  • STAR ID is required
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required

Responsibilities

  • Research on historic Space Nuclear Propulsion system and reactor core components
  • AI, Machine Learning, and Database Development, including prompt development, verification of results, parallel processing and efficient solution algorithms
  • Help coordinate, develop, and present technical materials related to Reactor and Core Components in support of design milestone reviews and anomaly investigations
  • Document and maintain data analysis processes in written work instructions
  • Identify and document customer objectives and product requirements
  • Other duties as assigned
