Engine Rebuild Technician Small or Large Bore (All Levels 1–4)

JA Riggs Tractor Company•Little Rock, AR
•Onsite

About The Position

Riggs Cat Power & Energy is hiring Engine Rebuild Technicians at Levels 1–4, from Apprentice to Lead/Master, for small-bore and large-bore engines. This is precision, shop-based rebuild work, distinct from the field-diagnostic Engine Technician role. Technicians may develop in either or both specializations and rebuild industrial, compression, and power engines. Small-bore work focuses on C7 through C32-class industrial and compression engines, with high-volume, fast-turnaround work emphasizing throughput, consistency, precision, and low comeback rates. Large-bore work includes 3500 and 3600 series engines, including G3600 gas engines, across Tier 2, Tier 4, and Tier 4 DGB fleets. It involves heavy rigging, crank deflection checks, and DGB conversions, with an emphasis on safety during heavy lifts and accurate recorded measurements. Responsibilities and scope grow by level. Apprentices assist with teardown, cleaning, parts handling, staging, accessory removal, and supervised measurements. Technician II staff perform independent overhauls and engine-component service. Senior technicians complete major overhauls, analyze failures, perform final quality sign-off, and train junior technicians. Lead/Master technicians run the rebuild line for their specialization, set standards, make rework and warranty decisions, coordinate with the Dyno team, develop apprentices, and provide corrective feedback. The role requires precision, adherence to OEM specifications and service manuals, safe shop and rigging practices, contamination control, organized parts handling, and accurate job and measurement records. Employees must pass work-related pre-employment physical demands; reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. The job is non-exempt and hourly. Duties and requirements may change as the employer’s needs change.

Requirements

  • All levels: Skill with precision tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, and torque wrenches; knowledge of torque sequences and OEM service manuals.
  • All levels: Shop and rigging safety habits, including pre-lift checks, and contamination-control practices.
  • All levels: Familiarity with Cat SIS 2.0 or a comparable system, such as John Deere Service ADVISOR, Cummins QuickServe/INSITE, Detroit DiagnosticLink, Jaltest, or Noregon JPRO.
  • All levels: Organized parts handling and accurate job and measurement logging.
  • Level 1: 0–2 years; suitable backgrounds include diesel-program graduates, military, on-highway, agricultural, heavy-equipment, truck, automotive, or aircraft mechanics.
  • Level 2: 2–5 years working on heavy-duty or industrial engines; small-bore experience with C4.4–C9 engines or large-bore experience with 3500-class or C27/C32 engines.
  • Level 2 and above: Cat ET, scope-of-repair and parts-reuse guidelines, and AFA I.
  • Level 2 small-bore: Common-rail and MUI troubleshooting.
  • Level 2 large-bore: Knowledge of T2 versus T4 versus T4 DGB cylinder heads.
  • Level 3: 5–10 years of experience and ability to recognize common failure modes.
  • Level 3: AFA I and II and family training for the applicable specialization.
  • Level 3 small-bore: Strong fuel-system diagnostics and ability to coach without friction.
  • Level 3 large-bore: Oil & Gas 3500 Overhaul and progress toward G3600 Master Mechanic.
  • Level 4: 10+ years of rebuild experience.
  • Level 4 small-bore: Full small-bore family training, AFA I and II, strong fuel-system diagnostics, and clear communication with clients and management.
  • Level 4 large-bore: Oil & Gas 3500 Overhaul, AFA I and II, large-bore family training, and G3600 Master Mechanic certification or completion within the first year.
  • Work quickly without cutting corners; never treat an out-of-spec result as acceptable.
  • Do not guess at specifications or sign off on unverified work; own mistakes, catch them early, and take junior technicians’ questions seriously.
  • Must be able to pass work-related pre-employment physical demands. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • Must be able to drive for extended periods.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE A1 Engine Repair or T2 Diesel Engines certification.
  • Prior support on 3600 or G3600 jobs.
  • GERP experience for large-bore Lead/Master work.

Responsibilities

  • Tear down, clean, inspect, and rebuild industrial, compression, and power engines.
  • Tag, kit, and stage parts; remove turbos and accessories; and take supervised measurements at the Apprentice level.
  • Assist with large-bore rigging, hoist moves, and 3600 teardowns where applicable.
  • Perform independent top-end and in-frame overhauls, fuel-system removal and installation, HP fuel-pump inspections, turbo service, and bearing-clearance and end-play checks.
  • Complete major overhauls, analyze failures and comebacks, perform final quality-control sign-off, and train junior technicians.
  • For large-bore work, perform crank deflection checks and T4 DGB conversions, coordinate outside machining, and complete 3600/G3600 overhauls as applicable.
  • Run the rebuild line for the assigned specialization and own throughput, comeback rates, scheduling, metrics, standards, and checklists.
  • Make rework, warranty, job-scoping, repair-versus-replace, and hour-estimate decisions as applicable to the specialization.
  • Work with the Dyno team on test failures, build the apprentice pipeline, and provide constructive corrective feedback.
  • Maintain safety during shop work and heavy lifts, follow specifications and torque sequences, control contamination, and keep accurate job and measurement records.
  • Communicate findings with clients and management and handle client escalations at the Lead/Master level.
