About The Position

This role involves designing, managing, and producing right-of-way and construction roadway plans for various transportation projects using automated engineering and design software. The position requires maintaining strong skills in new design technology and construction methodologies, providing technical advice and training, preparing analyses and reports, and offering engineering support. Effective project management to ensure timely and accurate completion is essential, along with communication with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret engineering data and information, preparing complete, clear, and concise reports and recommendations.
  • Complete roadway design tasks in OpenRoads Designer, AASHTOWare, PCES, ProjectWise, and other non-CADD applications, recognizing and analyzing significant problems and developing solutions.
  • Establish effective communication channels between VDOT, contractors, government agencies, and the public, investigating issues and resolving complaints.
  • Utilize established VDOT policies and procedures for the development and delivery of engineering projects, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate engineering program activities to meet deliverables within scope and timeline.
  • Assist in managing projects and tasks, including scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports, while completing multiple concurrent tasks and reporting updates.
  • Develop and review sub-components and complete roadway designs using automated engineering and design software from scoping to advertisement for a wide range of transportation projects.
  • Compute quantities and prepare plan assemblies for project milestones from scoping to advertisement, taking appropriate action to resolve problems related to project design.
  • Provide technical direction and support in applying VDOT's standards, specifications, policies, and procedures in the development of transportation projects, ensuring accuracy and correctness of deliverables.
  • Manage special program initiatives and projects as assigned, and serve and represent VDOT or assigned program area on various committees and work groups.
  • Demonstrate customer service and work habits that reflect VDOT Values, coordinating the flow of information both orally and in writing.
