About The Position

Perform intermediate professional and responsible administrative work coordinating and participating in the design, maintenance, operation, and future planning of a variety of public utility facilities. This role involves managing electric substation assets, maintaining as-built records and print updates, and serving as the Project Engineer for system improvements. The position also acts as an expert for electric substations and related compliance issues, maintains field assets like power supplies and battery rooms, manages spare parts inventory, and oversees the substation work order management system. Additionally, the role involves overseeing substation protection and coordination with Transmission and Distribution systems, SCADA controls policies and procedures, and assisting operations personnel. The engineer will also maintain maintenance and operations manuals for substation equipment and protective relaying.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical/civil engineering as related to the preparation of plans and specifications for electric systems
  • Thorough knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to the design of utility projects
  • Thorough knowledge of electric rates to provide customers with opportunities where possible to better manage their utility costs
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations related to electric substations
  • Ability to perform difficult engineering computations and to make recommendations on engineering problems
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with associates, contractors and the general public
  • Skill in the use of electrical/civil engineering instruments and equipment
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, orally and in writing
  • Ability to calculate complex cost reports
  • Ability to answer questions and resolve problems
  • Must have the physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions
  • Certification as an Engineer in Training or Professional Engineer license
  • Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in electrical engineering, civil engineering, or related field and considerable experience in public works or utility engineering

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with scheduling of maintenance activities for substation equipment
  • Preparing operating reports and spreadsheets to track operating parameters
  • Assisting with long range planning for the electric system
  • Creating cost analysis reports and designing of electric substation system improvements
  • Ensuring that electric substation system designs comply with standards and regulations
  • Manages electric substation assets
  • Maintain electric substation as-built and print updates
  • Serves as the Project Engineer on electric substation system improvements
  • Serves as an expert for electric substations, and for Federal, State, or local compliance issues affecting electric substations
  • Maintain assets in field including power supplies and battery rooms
  • Maintain inventory of spare parts for electric substations
  • Maintain substation work order management system for electric substations
  • Oversee substation protection and coordination with Transmission and Distribution systems
  • Oversee SCADA controls policies and procedures for electric substations
  • Assists operations personnel with the operation and maintenance of electric substations
  • Maintains the maintenance and operations manuals for electric substation equipment and protective relaying
  • Perform related tasks as required
