The Strategic Energy Management (SEM) team helps organizations integrate energy management into their daily operations through data-driven analysis, employee engagement, operational improvements, and continuous coaching. This role is central to addressing the increasing energy demand driven by AI, data centers, advanced manufacturing, and electrification, while also managing a complex energy generation portfolio. SEM professionals at TRC assist clients in preparing for a future with growing energy needs, evolving technologies, and changing market conditions. The work contributes to improved business performance, enhanced resiliency, and smarter energy management practices. As utilities expand investments in demand-side management and energy optimization, SEM offers a valuable opportunity to build skills applicable across the energy, consulting, operations, and technology sectors. Key terminology includes 'Participant' (customer organization), 'Stakeholders' (TRC staff, coaches, engineers, leadership, TVA representatives, etc.), and 'Client' (Tennessee Valley Authority - TVA). This position serves as a strategic advisor driving organizational change within the Tennessee Valley region. The role requires supporting local Program Participants, maintaining strong relationships with regional Stakeholders, and involves occasional travel throughout the Valley for meetings, site visits, program implementation support, and customer/partner engagement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Sustainability, Operations Management, Business, Manufacturing, Data Analytics, Organizational Leadership, Industrial Technology, or a closely related discipline.
  • 6-10 years relevant experience in SEM, industrial operations, energy management, manufacturing, utility programs, consulting, facilities, reliability, or continuous improvement.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in the development and optimization of participant EnMS programs. Advises organizations on integrating energy management into broader operational and business systems.
  • Provides strategic guidance on organizational adoption of ISO 50001 concepts and advanced continuous improvement practices. Helps participants institutionalize energy management as a core business process.
  • Leverages advanced performance metrics and trend analysis to support strategic decision making, organizational goal setting, and sustained energy performance improvements.
  • Designs and leads organizational transformation strategies that embed energy management into company culture. Advises leadership teams on governance structures, accountability mechanisms, and employee engagement approaches.
  • Develops and reviews complex financial evaluations supporting capital planning, operational improvements, and long-term energy management investments. Helps leadership understand business risks and opportunities.
  • Leads organizational change initiatives involving multiple stakeholder groups, sites, or business functions. Provides guidance on overcoming resistance and sustaining long-term adoption.
  • Facilitates high-impact workshops with senior leaders, cross-functional teams, and complex participant organizations. Uses advanced facilitation techniques to drive strategic discussions and consensus building.
  • Regularly engages with executive teams and senior leadership to communicate program strategy, organizational impacts, and business outcomes. Develops executive-level presentations and recommendations.

  • CEM, CMVP, PE, CEA, CP EnMS, Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, PMP, CRL, ISO 50001 implementation experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to complex participant organizations by aligning SEM initiatives with business objectives, operational priorities, capital planning efforts, and organizational performance goals to maximize long-term value creation.
  • Lead high-impact participant engagements characterized by organizational complexity, multiple stakeholders, and significant energy performance opportunities while developing customized implementation strategies that drive transformational results.
  • Influence leadership teams and cross-functional decision makers by facilitating strategic discussions, securing organizational commitment, addressing resistance to change, and building executive support for sustained energy management initiatives.
  • Provide advanced analysis of energy performance, operational processes, and organizational systems to identify systemic improvement opportunities, quantify business impacts, and support long-range energy and operational strategies.
  • Champion energy culture transformation efforts across participant organizations by designing change management approaches, leadership engagement strategies, governance structures, and accountability mechanisms that embed energy management into business processes and organizational decision-making.
  • Mentor and develop Energy Coach I and II staff by providing technical guidance, coaching facilitation skills, sharing best practices, and supporting quality assurance initiatives that strengthen overall program delivery capability.
  • Lead development and refinement of SEM methodologies, tools, and participant resources by incorporating industry best practices, emerging trends, and implementation learnings that improve participant outcomes and program effectiveness.
  • Represent the program with key external stakeholders, industry partners, and client leadership by providing subject matter expertise, supporting strategic initiatives, and helping strengthen regional adoption of SEM principles.
