About The Position

Provides technical support and patient care in endoscopic procedures under the direct supervision of the physician and the registered nurse. This role involves preparing the endoscopy suite, assisting physicians and nurses with specialized procedures, processing specimens, operating instruments, performing high-level disinfection of endoscopes, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. The technician also assists with inventory management and utilizes safe patient handling techniques.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or higher required upon hire
  • Requires critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Works under minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Responsibilities

  • Assists physicians and nurses with performing specialized procedures such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP).
  • Provides assistance with patient comfort measures and support for alleviating pre-procedure anxiety.
  • Connects electrocardiogram (EKG) leads, inserts bite blocks, and places grounding pads.
  • Provides irrigation as needed and advances or holds the endoscope as directed by the physician.
  • Prepares the endoscopy suite according to the scheduled procedure and physician preferences, including scope set-up, labeling irrigation solutions, and ensuring all supplies are readily available.
  • Ensures the scope functions with adequate air insufflation and irrigation, along with adequate video quality.
  • Processes tissue and bodily fluids specimens, including retrieving, labeling, and delivering specimens to the designated lab department.
  • Selects and operates instruments, such as biopsy forceps, polypectomy snares, hemostatic clips, various cautery probes, and retrieval nets/baskets as directed by the physician.
  • Performs endoscope high level disinfection and processing.
  • Maintains the gastrointestinal (GI) procedure area in a clean and safe condition.
  • Ensures necessary equipment and supplies are available for procedures.
  • Performs duties required for proper use of the decontamination room.
  • Assists with maintaining the inventory of supplies.
  • Operates the software to select the correct patient and procedure.
  • Utilizes safe lifting techniques and appropriate assistive devices.
