About The Position

This summer internship opportunity is for an Endoscopy Technician. The intern will be responsible for the proper care of endoscopy equipment, assisting physicians in the procedure room with patients and nursing staff, and preparing and cleaning rooms. The role involves maintaining equipment, assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, ensuring proper cleaning and disinfection of equipment, maintaining inventory, and providing patient care pre and post-procedure under the supervision of a registered nurse. The intern will also be responsible for adhering to infection control principles and utilizing electronic charting.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School graduate or equivalent G.E.D.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Effective understanding and use of the English language.
  • Must be flexible with working schedule and have ability to work occasional overtime.
  • Willingness to learn new tasks, be cross-trained in the center and be flexible with work load including assisting co-workers.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with diversified levels of patients, staff members, and management.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures and methods including telephone communication, office systems, and record keeping.
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives.
  • Ability to organize work material and/or charts to ensure accuracy of patient records.
  • Ability to handle and resolve problems.
  • Neat appearance and a professional demeanor.
  • Works with chemicals including, but not limited to, chlorine bleach, glutaraldehyde and formalin.
  • Physical demand requirement meets those define as HEAVY work, exerting 50 – 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 – 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 1 – 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Responsible for maintaining current BCLS.
  • Maintain annual fire safety/general safety training.
  • Maintain annual OSHA-TB.
  • Maintain annual OSHA Blood-borne Pathogen.
  • Maintain annual PPD skin test or TB Screening Form.
  • Must complete performance evaluation and return in a timely manner, including competency skills checklist.
  • Attends and participated in at least 75% of staff meetings and reviews minutes of those meetings not attended.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant or Surgical Technician Program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare procedure rooms and assist with diagnostic/therapeutic endoscopic procedures.
  • Assist the physician, nurses, and CRNA with endoscope procedures.
  • Set up each procedure room prior to procedure with appropriate equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Prepare specimens for the lab and document.
  • Properly chart interventions completed during procedures using electronic charting.
  • Care for and maintain equipment, test equipment prior to procedure, and report malfunctions.
  • Properly clean and disinfect/sterilize accessories used during procedures.
  • Care for, maintain, and disinfect the endoscopic washer.
  • Prepare appropriate paperwork and endoscopes for repair.
  • Maintain equipment records.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels and assist with ordering.
  • Clean and restock rooms and carts.
  • Provide patient care pre and post procedure under the supervision of the registered nurse.
  • Gather initial patient information, assist with patient dressing, take and record vital signs, and monitor pulse and respirations after procedures.
  • Adhere to infection control principles and universal precautions.
  • Keep nurse manager updated.
  • Order supplies as needed.
  • Utilize electronic charting throughout patient visit.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
