About The Position

The Endoscopy Technician Specialist performs decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the DDEC, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process. This role functions cooperatively with physicians and staff, exhibiting teamwork. The specialist is responsible for maintaining endoscopes and all accessories in working order, including preventative maintenance.

Requirements

High school graduate
One or more years of related work experience in endoscope reprocessing
Certified Sterile Processing/Distribution Technician required
Maintain current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
Able to read, write, and communicate
Display a primary interest in giving good patient care and maintaining standards of courtesy and friendliness to co-workers
Able to maintain and comply with patient confidentiality policy on all matters
Ability to determine appropriate course of action in more complex situations
Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, and be attentive to detail
Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and prioritize scheduling of work
Must be able to stand for 8 to 10 hours a day
Requires regular walking, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting
Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs
Must be able to manipulate objects—reaching, grasping, handling
Must exhibit good communication skills—understand, respond, and translate into action
Ability to delineate between numeric numbers

Responsibilities

Clean, disinfect, and reprocess all endoscopes according to center policy and current manufacturer recommendations/instructions for use (IFU).
Clean, disinfect, and sterilize endoscopic accessories between patients.
Operate and troubleshoot automatic endoscope reprocessors (AERs/DSDs) and other applicable endoscopy or patient monitoring equipment.
Anticipate and assist with maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and endoscopic accessories.
Immediately report equipment malfunction or compromise to the Center Director/Supply Coordinator and remove said equipment from use until resolved.
Responsible for all control parts of the sterilization process including decontamination, prep/pack/sterilize material, documentation of sterilization, and sterile storage.
Monitor the surgery schedule daily, identifying general specific and potential needs for all cases.
Monitor and maintain appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies.
Operate and maintain the steam autoclave, keeping records of loads completed, items in loads, and maintenance procedures performed.
Observe universal precautions.
Refer situations beyond ability or function to the Center Manager.
Maintain patient right to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors, family, or patient.
Maintain HIPAA policy and Identity Theft Protection policy.
Perform other tasks and duties as directed by the Center Director or Physician which are within their legal limitations.
Keep work area clean, neat, and stocked.
Assist with answering the phone when necessary.
Inform the nurse in charge when leaving for break, lunch, or for the day.
Maintain knowledge of potential exposure to hazardous materials (i.e., patient body fluids, disinfectant chemicals).
Maintain flexibility and perform other duties as required.
Participate in the Performance Improvement Program as directed.
Seek educational opportunities and accept responsibility for own professional growth and development.
Participate in in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
Complete required annual in-services and competency check-offs on time.
Assist with annual reprocessing competency check-offs for staff.
