This role plans, coordinates and directs the daily operations of a specific shift on a clinical unit. It involves supervising staff and facilitating communication with physicians and internal administrators to provide optimal patient and family-centered care. The Charge Nurse is recognized as a change agent, routinely leading efforts to strengthen organizational systems that support the mission, vision, and values of the department. They are adept at creative problem-solving, negotiating conflict, and collaborating with others, demonstrating insight, judgment, and clinically sound risk-taking. The role models expert communication skills and demonstrates foresight regarding the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes based on intuition and experience. The Charge Nurse is recognized as an expert clinician and a leader within their area of specialty, completing employee conference, risk management, and unit management reports within specified time frames. They identify the need for revision and evaluate the effectiveness of operational forms, providing and coordinating resources within the unit for optimal patient outcomes. The role models time management skills, ensures compliance with policies and procedures, and remains informed of innovative clinical trends through benchmarking and evidence-based practice. This position functions as a charge nurse, role models delegation skills, and assists colleagues in effective delegation utilizing the Synergy model for care, being considered an expert and a formal leader.
