The Encore Program at San Juan College creates opportunities for older adults to maintain lifelong vitality through self-development and service. This program presents an opportunity for instructors to offer a wide variety of specialized academic courses to an audience who generally take the classes for personal enrichment purposes. For some instructors, this is the best of all teaching worlds—teaching a subject you love to students who want to be there, with minimum testing. San Juan College may approve remote or hybrid work for adjunct employees within New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Texas (states subject to change at any time). All requests for remote work must be approved in advance by the Dean and Human Resources. Remote work options for locations outside of the United States are not permitted. Encore offers one-credit academic classes during the Fall, Spring and Summer sessions, designed for students 50 and older but open to all students 18 and older. Classes consist of 16 hours of instruction for lecture classes and 24 hours of instruction for activity or lab classes. These classes can be taught in the classroom or during special presentations including field trips, and scheduling for these classes can be flexible, based on content, classroom availability and other offerings. Students may take the classes either for a grade or for audit status.
