Responsible for the assessment and basic management of medical, trauma and environmental emergencies under the supervision of on or off-line medical control. Assists with patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the ED Registered Nurse. In the field, responsibilities include triage, CPR, oxygen therapy, shock prevention, splinting, and spinal immobilization. Ability to establish patient airway with oral or naso-pharyngeal airway, ventilate a patient with mask/ambu bag, and suction oral secretions when necessary. Immobilizes extremities on trauma patients; applies direct pressure to control hemorrhaging. Notifies appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain. Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in scope of practice. Adheres to Ambulance policies addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality. Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, care and observations. Transports patient and supplies safely. Maintains ambulance supplies and equipment. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Additional duties if employed in the Hospital Emergency Department include providing supportive care to Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse or physician, performing approved procedures per policy, and demonstrating the ability to work effectively as a multidisciplinary team member. Communicates effectively with all documentation, co-workers, patients, and physicians. Recognizes and reports appropriate data to the registered nurse. Assists registered nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations, and treatment. Performs other duties as inserviced, including crutch walking, dressing changes, and assisting physicians with splint or cast application. Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations, and guidelines. Assists patients from vehicle into wheelchair or onto gurney. Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately. Maintains patient comfort and privacy. Maintains and prepares rooms between patients and procedures. Assists with preparation of equipment for procedures. Transports patients and supplies to diagnostic departments and nursing units. Participates in continuing education and departmental in-service meetings. Maintains policies and procedures established by the department. Enhances professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, inservices, and workshops. Operates equipment safely and correctly. Maintains a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with physicians and hospital staff. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
