About The Position

This is a full-time position with a starting rate of $22.00 per hour ($49,192 annually). The EMT-Basic is responsible for preparing vehicles and equipment for service, responding to assignments, operating the vehicle, conducting patient assessments, providing patient care, applying extrication skills, safely moving patients for transport, ensuring safe transport, unloading patients, transferring patient care, and completing required documentation. The role emphasizes maintaining high levels of patient care, adhering to medical protocols, safety standards, company policies, and demonstrating professionalism and customer service.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain current Commonwealth of Virginia EMT-Basic certification.
  • Possess and maintain current certifications in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Have high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Possess and maintain current Virginia vehicle operator’s license and records in compliance with company policy.
  • Be adept with the use of map books, and be able to receive and follow written and/or verbal instructions appropriately.
  • Be able to maintain a positive attitude under a variety of conditions, and relate appropriately to a variety of individuals.
  • Be physically able, as determined by examination determining fitness, to perform job functions as described.

Nice To Haves

  • Have solid base knowledge of geographic service area, to include major street and landmark locations.
  • Have one year full-time experience functioning as an EMT-B with an ALS agency in a pre-hospital setting.
  • Be actively pursuing education and training to advance certification to EMT-P level within eighteen months.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains high standards for health, safety, welfare, and ethical behavior.
  • Adheres to all policies of agencies, institutional and regulatory bodies.
  • Conducts him/herself in a professional manner and ensures high level of patient customer care.
  • Supports, interprets and complies with the philosophies of the company.
  • Maintains own required certification and licensure, including current Virginia vehicle operator’s license.
  • Achieves and maintains standards of patient care and clinical performance in accordance with protocols; clinical care and medical control directives will be in the best medical interest of the patient and will be confined to the scope of practice for the level of certification as defined by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Richmond Ambulance Authority.
  • Loads and transports patients from a point of pick-up to the vehicle and from the vehicle to the point of destination; this includes lifting patients to and from backboard, stretcher, or equivalent, and maneuvering patients through hallways, up and down stairways, and up and down vehicle/handicap ramps as required.
  • Is responsible at all times for the care and transportation of patients treated and for the accurate documentation and timely completion of all required paperwork.
  • Operates all company assigned vehicles in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances governing vehicle operation; must also comply with approved company policy regarding safe and efficient vehicle operations.
  • Is responsible for appropriate responses to and compliance with all Communications Center directives.
  • Follows direction of management and/or senior ranked personnel.
  • Maintains established standards of conduct at all times when working with physicians, nurses, public safety agency officials, other affiliated health care professionals and members of the general public.
  • Is responsible for the proper care, use, and appearance of his/her assigned vehicles and equipment, including complete and accurate equipment inventories.
  • Is responsible for appropriate and professional radio transmissions.
  • Reports to assigned area on time and when scheduled to work as assigned with other employees; must work in a respectful manner with assigned employees.
  • Immediately reports to the Operations Supervisor or designee, any malfunctions of and/or damage to any equipment, whether or not they were using or operating the equipment at the time of the damage or malfunction; responsible for accurate documentation of said incident within appropriate time frame.
  • Immediately notifies the on-duty Operations Supervisor, or designee, and the Communications Center of any incident not within normal or required operations; responsible for accurate documentation of said incident within accepted time frame.
  • Adheres to all policies, guidelines and directives set forth in the Company’s SOG manual and Employee Handbook and other policies promulgated by the company.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned by management.
