About The Position

McDowell County EMS is accepting applications for PRN (as needed) EMS Provider positions. Applicants may apply at any certification level, including Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), or Paramedic. PRN providers are responsible for delivering high-quality prehospital emergency medical care and safe patient transportation while serving as an integral part of the McDowell County EMS team. Employees function within their certification level and are expected to maintain operational readiness, professionalism, and clinical competency while supporting the EMS system. McDowell County EMS is committed to maintaining a highly qualified PRN workforce and welcomes applications throughout the year. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis as they are received.

Requirements

  • Current North Carolina EMT certification or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Completion of FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 courses.
  • Current North Carolina Advanced EMT certification or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • Current North Carolina Paramedic certification or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Successful completion of required background investigation, drug screening, and MEDPAT.
  • Must maintain all required certifications and licensure throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous 911 emergency response experience.
  • Previous experience in prehospital emergency medical services or related healthcare settings.
  • Additional certifications such as Critical Care Paramedic, Community Paramedicine, Hazardous Materials Operations, or specialty EMS training.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Respond promptly to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Operate ambulances and emergency vehicles safely in accordance with county policy and state law.
  • Assess, treat, monitor, and transport patients experiencing medical, traumatic, behavioral, or psychiatric emergencies.
  • Provide patient care consistent with North Carolina Office of EMS protocols and certification level.
  • Assist with or perform Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) procedures as authorized by certification level.
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic patient care documentation.
  • Conduct daily vehicle and equipment inspections to ensure operational readiness.
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of assigned stations, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, coworkers, dispatchers, and receiving facilities.
  • Participate in required training, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain familiarity with McDowell County geography, EMS policies, and operational procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of EMS operations.
