About The Position

The EMS Program Director is responsible for the development, delivery, and oversight of high-quality Emergency Medical Services (EMS) education programs, including Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic courses, in accordance with the standards established by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS), the Maryland State EMS Board, and the National EMS Education Standards. In addition to overseeing initial EMT and Paramedic education programs, the EMS Program Director leads and collaborates with a team of EMS Educators to provide comprehensive workforce development initiatives, including new employee orientation, remediation and retraining programs, continuing education, and professional development opportunities for approximately 800 EMS providers throughout Maryland and Virginia. This leadership position is designed for an exceptional educator, clinician, and program manager who is passionate about developing highly competent, compassionate, and clinically proficient EMS professionals. The EMS Program Director is responsible for ensuring educational excellence across classroom instruction, laboratory training, simulation experiences, field internships, and clinical education. The role fosters critical thinking, evidence-based practice, clinical competency, and professional conduct among students and EMS personnel at all stages of their careers. The ideal candidate is an innovative and dynamic leader with extensive experience in prehospital medicine, adult learning principles, curriculum development, and educational program management. They possess strong instructional and communication skills, a commitment to student and employee success, and demonstrated experience in leadership, team development, performance management, and organizational collaboration. The EMS Program Director will serve as a strategic partner in advancing clinical excellence, regulatory compliance, workforce readiness, and the overall quality of EMS education throughout the organization.

Requirements

  • Graduation From High School or equivalent
  • 19 years old or older at time of hire for insurance purposes
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Ability to drive company vehicles with a clean driving record.
  • Availability for recall in times of crisis
  • Ability to pass a lift test of 150 – 200 pounds.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Current Maryland EMS provider license at Paramedic or higher level
  • Current Maryland MICRB Level II instructor certification.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor certification through American Heart Association or ability to receive in 30 days from hire.
  • Ability to function as a primary instructor for EMT programs or ability to receive 30 days from hire.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to teach adult learners using evidence-based educational methods
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace safety by identifying hazards, reporting risks, and supporting continuous safety improvements.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures and regulatory requirements while actively promoting a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Collaborate with team members to upload safety standards and foster a culture of safety across all operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum three (3) years continuous experience as an EMS provider prior to instructor certification preferred
  • Prior experience teaching EMT or Paramedic courses at an accredited EMS training program
  • Strong adult education and instructional design skills
  • Experience with simulation-based training and scenario development
  • Ability to engage diverse learners and foster critical thinking
  • Experience mentoring new EMS providers or precepting students
  • Current instructor credentials such as: ACLS Instructor, PALS Instructor, BLS Instructor, NRP Instructor, ITLS / PHTLS Instructor
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in EMS, education, healthcare, or related field
  • Strong commitment to student success, patient care excellence, and professional development
  • Ability to create a high-performance learning environment that produces confident, competent EMS clinicians

Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality specialty and critical care transport services in compliance with Butler Medical Transport policies, MIEMSS regulations, and state protocols.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and provide advanced life support interventions during transport.
  • Safely manage and monitor critically ill patients utilizing specialty care equipment and therapies.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and clinical support to EMTs and other crew members.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, hospital staff, dispatch personnel, physicians, and healthcare partners.
  • Complete accurate and timely patient care reports before the end of each shift.
  • Operate electronic communication devices, mobile phones, and tablet-based documentation systems.
  • Ensure readiness, cleanliness, and operational status of work stations, vehicles, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain current certifications and complete all required continuing education and refresher training.
  • Remain current on applicable state protocols, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in community outreach and public education events as assigned.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and exceptional customer service in all interactions.
  • Periodic clinical site visits and field internship supervision
  • Occasional evening or weekend instruction depending on course schedule
  • Frequent standing, movement during practical skills labs, and simulation instruction
  • Possible travel to partner hospitals, EMS agencies, or training site
