About The Position

The EMS Instructor, under the direct supervision of the EMS Unit Supervisor/EMS Coordinator, provides education and training to all disciplines of emergency care providers. This role takes a leadership position in course development through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of classroom, laboratory, clinical, and online instruction. The instructor demonstrates attributes of a professional educator, including being self-motivated, an effective communicator, organized, knowledgeable, prepared, confident, respectful, and a student advocate. They are responsible for developing EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, and/or AHA courses using guidelines from state and national agencies. The instructor must apply the principles of Adult Learning, set clear goals, monitor student progress, provide effective feedback, and mentor novice instructors. They are also responsible for documenting and submitting class records and teaching in various formats and locations based on student demand. Exceptional customer service and effective interaction with students, customers, and Mercy Partners are essential.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a University or Community College with a degree or certificate in an Emergency Care discipline (i.e.: EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, RN, PA, DO, MD, Law Enforcement)
  • Two years of experience providing Emergency Care in ones State of Wisconsin Licensed level.
  • State of Wisconsin or Illinois Licensed Emergency Care Provider, or other applicable certification, such as EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, RN, PA, DO or MD
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) required within three (3) months.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, customers or employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Knowledge of Word Processing software, including development of Power Points for the classroom.

Nice To Haves

  • If RN, BSN preferred or enrolled in BSN program.
  • State of Wisconsin or Illinois Certified EMS Instructor II or working toward completion preferred.
  • Certified American Heart Association Instructor in at least one level (BLS, ACLS, PALS) within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Provides education and training to all disciplines of emergency care providers.
  • Takes a leadership role in course development through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of classroom, laboratory, clinical and on-line instruction.
  • Responsible for EMT, AEMT ,Paramedic and/or AHA Course development using the guidelines and curriculum outlined by state ( Wisconsin Department of Family Services and HFS 110) and/or the appropriate national agencies (CoAEMSP, FEMA, American Heart Association, etc.).
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide quality instruction in all learning domains ( Cognitive, Psychomotor and Affective).
  • Applies the principles of Adult Learning to the classroom.
  • Demonstrates the ability to set clear and obtainable goals and objective for course participants and then monitor and evaluate student progress according to state, overseeing agency and/or department criteria.
  • Engages the learner and provides well timed and effective feedback.
  • Provides mentorship and/or supervision to the novice instructor.
  • Instructs in the at least one of the American Heart Association Classes (BLS, ACLS, PALS).
  • Document, collect, maintain and submit accurate class records.
  • Teach at varied time and places using varied formats based on student demand: Day or evening, main campus, mobile Sim lab or on site of students' employment.
  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service and interacts effectively with students, customers and Mercy Partners of all disciplines.
