About The Position

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. We are looking for an Engineer in Training to join the Energy Management System (EMS) team within the Operations Systems department. Our team is responsible for maintaining the integrity, reliability, and security of the General Electric (GE) EMS to AESO standards. This is achieved through the design, operation, organization and management of system data. In this position, your main functions include maintaining and enhancing the core functionality of the EMS software suite, including but not limited to the Habitat, Scada, Generation, and Power System applications. You will also perform real-time event analysis and performance monitoring of the system under the direction of the EMS Engineers. Other responsibilities include support in the following areas; designing enhancements to the software, providing requirements, solutions and test plans to projects and facilitating the implementation of system software upgrades in line with Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards. You will support the EMS Engineers in the operation and maintenance of the Energy Management System. This includes assisting with system configuration, software upgrades, and test execution across various components of the software stack, including verification of external integrations. You also provide real-time operational support to the control room and assist with project requirement gathering, investigation activities, and decision making support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent, from an accredited university.
  • Professional designation; from the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists in Alberta (APEGA), equivalent, or In Progress.
  • Minimum of two years of applicable experience in the following:
  • Supporting electrical utility organizations.
  • Knowledge of power system software applications, tools, and industry best practices.
  • Programming with C/C++ and PowerShell.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to real-time applications to develop background, awareness, and understanding of the complex system.
  • Provide technical support for day-to-day maintenance of real-time systems (EMS, SCADA, Infrastructure) & system administration of real-time control room applications.
  • Support the team with reviewing designs and implementation plans to grid software platforms.
  • Support the testing and deployment of software security updates.
  • Assist with code reviews of 3rd party developed software prior to adoption and implementation.
  • Review and support deployment plans to ensure a reliable production release.
  • Create, review, and maintain system documentation to align with real-time requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production system issues as required.
  • Assist in the development of site-based procedures to ensure effective real-time system operation, integrity, availability, utilization, data backup, and disaster recovery.
  • Execute cyber and physical security policies and procedures across the Bulk Electric System (BES) systems to ensure compliance with all CIP standards.
  • Develop and gain understanding of Alberta Reliability Standards and applicability in the BES.
  • Work with technical and non-technical stakeholders to clarify and refine business requirements.
  • Assist in defining, coordinating, and executing the development, testing, and implementation of a technical solution.
  • Perform objective analyses of data and processes, develop recommendations and ensure documentation accurately reflects their subject matter.
