About The Position

Engineer is primarily responsible for engineering support of the Reliability applications, processes, and the associated data and solution integrity. This includes supporting State Estimator functionality in the PJM, SPP and ERCOT regions as well as other reliability tools used in transmission operations. On the support aspect, the engineer will focus on monitoring and addressing data/model quality issues and on maintaining acceptable solution quality in support of Real-time system reliability. The engineer will be part of 24x7 On-Call support staff rotation in order to provide non-stop support to the System Control Center; this means that during the time they are on-call they are expected to be available and respond. Experience in Energy Management Systems, system reliability & grid operations, planning and modeling is a plus. The engineer will be troubleshooting and analyzing EMS power flow solution iteration results and work with various other applications used in the daily reliability and operations of the electric grid. The engineer will verify modeling integrity in assigned area in accordance with AEP’s capital and O&M work plan.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in a program accredited by ABET.
  • Entry-level knowledge and experience in the application of theory to solve well-defined problems or provide analysis, with guidance from higher-level engineers.
  • Fundamental understanding of standards, codes and regulations relevant to the area of assignment.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work with others in both supplying information and seeking assistance as necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Energy Management Systems, system reliability & grid operations, planning and modeling is a plus.
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting State Estimator functionality in the PJM, SPP and ERCOT regions as well as other reliability tools used in transmission operations.
  • Monitoring and addressing data/model quality issues and on maintaining acceptable solution quality in support of Real-time system reliability.

  • Assisting higher-level engineers in handling well-defined portions of more complex problems and analyses.
  • Coordinating work activities of others as required to resolve routine engineering tasks.
  • Performing work activities as assigned and coached by higher-level employees.
  • Providing input to routine project planning documents related to scheduling and understanding the use of scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities.
  • Monitoring project status and recommending action accordingly.
  • Preparing cost estimates using established standards.
  • Developing understanding of the workflow for routine engineering projects.
  • Accomplishing work according to plans and schedules established by higher-level employees.
  • Actively seeking out information and understanding of engineering problems and solution techniques applicable to area of responsibility.
  • Applying basic techniques to perform analysis associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
